Hi all,

Firstly i am a bit of a n00b to all of this computer stuff so please excuse my niavety to this.

I do a lot of simulator racing (iracing) and I am looking to upgrade my CPU and looking for some advice what is a good upgrade.

I am currently running a i7-6700k on an Asus z170-E.

From what I can see the best cpu I can go for while keeping the same board is the i7-7700k.

So I have 2 questions...

Would that be enough of a jump to justify paying £80 for that CPU?

Or

Can anyone recommend a fairly priced motherboard CPU combo which would give me a good jump?

Thanks in advance all

For £80 7700K is not worth it I believe.

Even ~£20 pricier new 12100F is considerably faster, though it needs a new motherboard too.

Edit: oh, 12100F is even cheaper in UK ~£70 - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/grhFf7/intel-core-i3-12100f-33-ghz-quad-core-processor-bx8071512100f

Perhaps even 6-core 12400F at ~100£ is in the price range - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/pQNxFT/intel-core-i5-12400f-25-ghz-6-core-processor-bx8071512400f

For motherboard  £120 - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/yMGbt6/msi-pro-b760-p-wifi-ddr4-atx-lga1700-motherboard-pro-b760-p-wifi-ddr4

Basically, if you're upgrading the system anyway, consider an AM4 system. Yes, it's EoL hardware, but your current 7th gen Intel platform is considerably older.

Ebay seller offers a CPU+mainboard combo for 120 quid (link!), which requires only RAM and a cooler. A standard Stealth cooler from AMD suffices (15 quid: link!) and 2x 16GB DDR4 RAM stick (link!) at £40 each and you'll have a decent system for your needs for not a lot of money. The CPU in the bundle has an onboard GPU (so technically it's an APU) which has better graphics then the Intel stuff you now have.

Noticeably slower than 12400F would be though. I mean a lot, a budget build. I'm not against AM5 AMD builds but Ryzen 5 3400G is really slow.
