Upgraded GPU - Performance meh, why?

Go to solution Solved by ShadowWolf275,

I figured it out! It was security software! Beforehand, when I did the test on the 3060, I didn’t have Malwarebytes installed. In between then, I installed Malwarebytes, which resulted in slow download speeds and affected Helldivers 2. After quitting the program, the GPU performed significantly better! Starting out in a game alone, GPU was at 80-90% usage, CPU was at 75% usage and FPS was at an average of 150! When people joined, the frames went down but I was averaging around 115 when I had a full team

I had a similar problem years ago on my previous rig when using Photoshop and some of my processes were slow to the point of long delays and load times. Turned out to be my security software Acronis.

Thank you for the suggestions everyone!

So I just built a new rig (a few days ago) and decided to treat myself to a new higher end GPU. So I went from a MSI Nvidia 3060 TI 8GB to MSI Nvidia 4070 TI Super 16 GB. Testing out Helldivers 2 (main game I've been playing lately), I noticed my frames from the previous GPU were about around 100 FPS. Settings were set mid high and performance level was high or hit max but handled well with the new rig. With the new GPU, performance hits about 50%, handles well, but FPS is around 80. Settings were the same the and I even set higher, and everything still ran smooth, but FPS still sits around 80.

Did a clean install of Nvidia driver, checked settings, changed the in game settings to all kinds of combinations and still the same. I'm using the 12VHPWR cable and temps are normal. CPU temps are stable too. CPU is at about 45% in performance. I normally don't opt for high end GPUs cause I didn't have a rig that could handle the performance and couldn't afford it in the past, but getting this GPU I thought I was going to be amazed of the change in performance, but I don't see much change. Am I missing something?

Is the GPU in the correct PCIE slot? I've seen some put it low down in the slow ones.

If you're only seeing 50% utilization on your graphics card, then it means that something else in your system is limiting performance severely.

Looking at a couple of videos on YouTube, it looks like, in game, the i9 12900K gets around 90-110fps. So I'm going to point at your CPU and say that it's not fast enough.

Total CPU utilization is an irrelevant metric. Most games are limited by single core performance.

You can test my hypothesis by cranking up visual settings. I would guess you'll see hardly any performance hit by turning up the eye candy.

You may even see a performance increase, as backwards as that sounds, because if your utilization drops too low on the GPU, it can sometimes turn off clusters of cores to save power, and that can result in lower performance.

sounds you were cpu limited already, then changing to a better gpu won't help much... as per above you can try crank up settings to get better utilization.

also did you use DDU?

yeah that's what op got *before* changing the gpu... so probably hard cpu bound i guess?
