I updated my computer last spring with a new processor and new GPU which meant I had the processor and GPU that I took out. I decided to take those parts, (processor: Ryzen 5-3600; GPU: GTX 1660 Super,) and build a system for my daughter. I only needed a motherboard and RAM to do the build, I had everything else. I got an Asus Prime B450M-A II motherboard and Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM, ( 2x8GB, 3600MHz.)

I started the build this last weekend and put things together real quick to try and do a quick post before I put it in the case. It wouldn't post. It actually wouldn't even power on. I started checking things and discovered that the CPU did not fully seat in the socket. I was able to push it in to the point I thought it was seated in the socket. It took some pressure, which didn't seem like a good thing but it did seem to go in all the way. I was able to remove the processor and put it back in and it didn't damage the CPU so I figured it was ok. It still wouldn't start. I was able to make it seem like it did power on by messing with the CPU power connection, fans running and GPU fans were running, but it never posted.

I then started taking my current computer apart to swap in known good parts, (which the parts I was using for the build should have been known good parts cause they were working fine when I took them out of my computer last spring for the upgrades.) Nothing worked. I changed the GPU and also changed the power supply, nothing.

My thought at this point is that I somehow got that rare bad motherboard and I should just to try and RMA it. I also had the thought that maybe if I actually put the CPU cooler on it might tighten down to the point the processor would actually make contact and work, but that doesn't actually seem like a good idea.

I'm at a loss at this point and would appreciate any ideas.

This sounds really bad to me, I'd like to see it to understand it.

This sounds even worse. I fear bent pins or something stuck in the socket.

Let's start there, give us a good picture of the failing cpu's bottom.

Maybe a good picture of the socket if there's anything to see

I understand your concern cause it was the same concern I had. I've done my best to get good pictures but I can also tell you that my very first thought was bent pins and I inspected it and didn't see any.

This is how it sits if I just set it in the socket without pushing down at all. This is what is leading me to think the board is bad and I need to get a replacement.

Just a stupid question. Did you unlatch the lever before putting the CPU in the socket ? On the picture (the second one), you can clearly see part of the lever at the right of the CPU and it is latched down.

As for the socket and pins, they seem good to me (the last 3 pictures) even if they were trippy to look at closely 🙂

Good luck !
