Hi everyone,

I'm facing an issue with my GPU (L40S). It doesn't seem to be detected by either the MB firmware or the operating system, and I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting. Here's a breakdown of the situation:

System Specs:

  • GPU: L40S
  • Motherboard: Asus prime z90-p
  • CPU: Intel i7-12700
  • RAM: 128GiB
  • PSU: 1200W

What I've Tried So Far:

  1. Checked Physical Connections: I’ve reseated the GPU in the PCIe slot, ensuring it's properly connected.
    • I even checked cables with a multimeter. There are 12V
  2. Tried Different PCIe Slot: I tested the GPU in another PCIe slot, but it still isn't detected.
  3. Tested with Another Operating System: I tried the rig with different OS (windows 11 and Ubuntu), and it’s still not recognized.
    • Windows 11 doesn't recognize any nvidia device
    • Ubuntu command "lspci" doesn't list any nvidia device
  4. Checked Power Supply: The PSU has enough wattage, and I confirmed the power cables are connected to the GPU.

Behavior:

  • In BIOS: The GPU doesn't show up in the list of available devices.
  • In OS: The OS doesn’t detect the GPU, even after a fresh boot.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue with this model?
  2. Are there any BIOS settings or updates I might be missing?
  3. Could this be a hardware failure with the GPU itself?
  4. Is this behaviour related to some kind of wierd nvidia license?

I’d really appreciate any advice or insights. Thanks in advance!

Have you DDU'd the existing driver and reinstalled a new driver from the Nvidia website? Windows (and Windows Server) won't show the GPU until a working driver is installed; they'll just show as the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

"Not breaking it or making it worse is key."

"Bad choices make good stories."

Hi and thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, I can see that much from Windows... All I can see, are the Intel gpu and the onboard devices. Definitely not a "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter".

Despite everything, the GPU driver installer doesn't start. It quits because of lack of nvidia devices.

Anyway, I'm still messing around with the WS. Can it be a VBIOS setting?

Hi folks,

I finally have updates.

The factory service said that migrating from a consumer CPU to a server one fixed the problem i am facing.

Onestly, I am scheptical. PCIe is PCIe, no matter what the CPU and MB are. The GPU should've been detected by the former configuration.

Am I missing something? Is the L40s detected only by server CPUs?
