Hello,

I'm looking to upgrade my RAM for Christmas. 🌲☃️

I use my computer for gaming and I fiddle around with stable diffusion a bit and I dual boot Linux and Windows.

Currently there is a Ryzen 5 3600 CPU and some generic 16gb Kingston RAM.

What are some RAM (32GB) suggestions that would give me the best performance in an all AMD system (if that even matters)?

Looking to spend under $150 but if the performance doesn't really change much in the higher price rance I wouldn't mind saving some cash.

Thank you!

Jim

Are you running out of your current RAM?

Speed? 1 or 2 sticks?

I am currently running out of my RAM while doing the ai stuff and multitasking.

As for the speed this is part of my question. I don't know how fast my CPU will support. I want to get the most performance I can so I can use the RAM for a long time. It's 2 sticks, 2x8 at the moment.

If you plan to upgrade you can get faster,

but anything above 3200/3600 is really waste of money, CL18 is also plenty but if CL16 isn't too expensive it's a decent metric.

How many slots filled? Or does your MB only have 2?

How fast is your Kingston running, could you get similar model again? (because that can work unless the factory switched up chips with that specific model)

If you're going to get serious about Stable Diffusion and possibly get in to Flux rendering, you're going to want to get more than 32GB TBH.  I was running 32GB when I got back in to it in the last few months & I was STILL running out of RAM with that: My symptoms were I'd hit 99% RAM usage, then the system would be almost completely unusable for 1-2 minutes while things finished loading, then the rendering would start.  After doing some research, I found that anyone with more than 32GB of RAM didn't seem to have that issue regularly/at all, and instead of going "I guess I'll double it" I just decided to go full retard & got a 2x48GB kit...

And I'm very glad I did, because this is what my Task Manager looked like the first few days of rendering after I got the RAM in & tuned stable:

So if I HAD gotten a 64GB kit, it might've still had the same issues lol

Should be noted this only applies to Flux-checkpoint rendering, as far as I know, regular SD/SDXL doesn't use THIS MUCH System RAM.

But yeah, if you wanna really get in to rendering full bore, and eventually upgrade your system to really push it & lower your render times etc, since you're on AM4/DDR4 still, I would recommend going for a 4x16GB kit if you can find a good one that's in your price range, at least.  4 sticks is less of an issue on AM4 than it is on AM5 (at least it was for me, I ran 4 sticks on my 5950X setup that I had previous to this one and didn't have issues after I tuned it, was running CL14 3800MHz with the FCLK at 1900MHz to match, ran like butter).

As for specific recommendations, I can't really make one because I've been out of DDR4-land for so long that I don't know what is & isn't good anymore... I can say that from what I've seen, DDR4 prices have kind of gone back up a bit - but a quality 3600 or 4000MHz kit (that you can underclock to 3800 if your CPU can do 1900FCLK) is ideal.

For regular SD/SDXL 32GBs should be perfect though, that's what I had when I was rendering last year (before Flux came out) and never had any issues.
