I want to build a custom rack mount PC for my home assistant.
I will use Frigate for AI object detection, node-red, MQQT and other addons for home automation.
And may host my Plex media server.

Final selection. What do you think? Overkill or under-kill?🤣

Motherboard: ASUS ProArt B550-Creator
Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
Google Coral PCIe Accelerator for use with Frigate
RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200
Primary Storage: 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD (for OS and containers)
Secondary Storage: NAS
Case: Rosewill 4U Server Chassis Rackmount Case
Cooling: Noctua NH-U12S CPU Cooler
PSU: Corsair RM850x 850 Watts

The most hungry piece of software appears to be Frigate, which would get fed by the Coral NPU. Other services seem to be light-weight and may be handled by a dual-core x86 processor or even an ARM-powered Rockchip RK35xx processor (with NPU bundled and supported by Frigate). Some components may therefore be downgraded to save some bucks:

  • Replace the processor with Ryzen 5500/4500.
  • Replace the boot drive with a smaller one (128~256 GB), if it's not intended for virtualization.
  • Replace the power supply with a smaller one (rated 500~650W, Bronze/Gold certified).

Or, replace the WHOLE platform with a FriendlyELEC RK3588 board.😉
