For my second build log I plan to rebuild my personal rig which I built back in 2006, I did do some upgrades over time and I intent to include them in the rebuild, and for this reason it will not be included in the other period accurate builds as it would likely break the rules, think of it as a bonus build and defiantly not me I'm trying to buy some time while other parts arrive 😉

Shortly after finding the acrylic case I found someone selling a machine using the same case I had back in 2006, so I called him up and we able to strike a deal. This case seems to have been quite a popular one back then, likely due to it performing good enough, looking good enough, and most importantly being cheap, I appreciate for most there isn't anything special about this case, but I have a soft spot for it.

The case is missing the black center part of the on/off button, other than this it is in good condition, fortunately I still have my original case from 2006, it's in rough shape but it has a complete button so I will remove it and install it on this case.

Now I might I have gotten a little carried away and started to dismantling it before I remembered that I meant to take pictures, forgive me 😅

Fyi this is a fully functioning system.

Of course we have another ticking time bomb, just a larger one this time:

I managed to remove and defuse the bomb, so we can continue in relative safety 🫡

I have never owned a 9600gt but I remembered them being a decent value back when they came out, this one looks in good nick so I will happily add it to my collection.

Of course we have mismatched sticks, it's a common occurrence, but understandable.

Hmmm, my spidey senses are tingling, I think this might just be a newer addition :old-skeptical:

I can't remember ever seeing this NOX cpu cooler before, it looks like it might have been half way decent back in its day, this will likely feature in another build log one day.

I will keep this board around as it works

And here we have my favorite core 2 chip, the Q9550.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me and point out the Q6600 as being a legendary chip, and their right it was great, but the Q9550 was basically a locked QX9770 with a slower core clock and fsb, but overclocking, do I need say more? I had my Q9550 stable at 4.2ghz for benching and 3.9ghz for everyday use.

I already have most of the parts for this build except the motherboard which is being a pain to find, I might continue the build with another one and replace it in the future if I'm ever able to find the right board, or at least something close to it.

494fsb on a not bios modded lower end asus board is impressive especially on a quad where the only boards i know of that can consistently clock them >500fsb would be the ep45 ud3r/p and asrock p45/x48

if you plan on pushing that board i can make a modbios for it in a minute or two, just a simple ebb swap with a maximus ii formula thatll raise fsb capabilities, my p5q went from 530 stock to 570 modded atleast bios boot wise as this is a rather pathetic board compared to the p5k

as for that psu its essentially a 450w (12v = 37a = 444w) so yeah garbage unit but hey atleast it isnt multirail so itll probably behave like a 450w and run lower power systems

chip wise e5450 or x5460 might be interesting upgrade options for the higher multis (esp when quads dont clock fsb that high) and potentially better bins though unless theyre better samples i doubt youll be able to hit 4.5 at 1.35v but 4.1-4.3 at 1.35v is acheivable for most

I did that on a P5Q-E motherboard, so yes P45
