Story: I am a mechanical engineering student, and for a project i was trying to install ROS 2 on ubuntu, but with virtual machine it was very slow, as i only have 8 gb ram from which only 6 gb is available due to shared ram with gpu, and currently running windows 11. so i decided to install ubuntu as dual boot, i intalled 24.04 and came to realise the ros version i wanted doesnt work with this ubuntu version, and then i needed to install ubuntu 22.04 so i can work with ros2 humble, so today i did that, but when i was intalling the linux, in the automatic install or the first option it gives just showed me my second drive (1TB HDD) and not my main SSD with windows, although ubuntu 24.04 automatically did got installed correctly on my main drive ssd without me asking, but ubuntu 22.04 did not, so i tried custom option and it showed so much on my ssd i didnot knew what to do, as i was in my uni bus, and i needed to have linux ready by lunch, i just installed in my hdd, and it all went good, but it was slow and somethings didnt work.

Problem: I accidentally deleted the ubuntu partition and the partition something called efi etc, of about (500 mb), as you can see in the first photo 90gb was ubuntu partition.

I also extended the partition as i hoped it would do nothing but it did something and then i got this screen below

i tried some youtube videos and got nothing, first is my pc picture, and second is the tutorial

i also tried https://askubuntu.com/questions/1310207/i-can-t-start-pc-after-i-dual-booted-ubuntu-and-deleted-the-ubuntu-partition and After following all the steps from the guide, I was able to boot back into Windows temporarily by using the exit command in the GRUB menu. However, despite making the recommended changes in the BIOS (adjusting boot order to prioritize the OS Boot Manager) i did save changes, the GRUB menu continues to appear on every restart, preventing a direct boot into Windows.

  1. Any suggestions on how to resolve this?
  2. is this harmful to my pc?
  3. will i have to backup my data to undo this grub effect?
  4. also please tell me can i safely install ubuntu 22.04 in my ssd, along with windows
  5. also any suggestions on how to remove 2gb shared ram, i have https://support.hp.com/bg-en/document/c06717350 (hp 14s-dk1027au) this laptop with very basic bios, and nothing else.

Do you need a dedicated ubuntu os install? ROS2 can be installed using wsl (Windows Subsystem for Linux)

https://docs.ros.org/en/jazzy/Tutorials/Advanced/Simulators/Webots/Installation-Windows.html

Problem you are facing is Ubuntu has installed a grub efi shim to windows efi boot partition. Need delete this shim to stop the grub menu showing. If you are able to to boot to windows use these instructions in this thread to delete the Ubuntu folder from the EFI boot folder

https://askubuntu.com/questions/429610/uninstall-grub-and-use-windows-bootloader

If you want to install ubuntu along side windows, first prepare the drive by delete/resizing partitions so you have free unallocated space to install ubuntu to. You can do this using gparted before running the installer. When installing ubuntu should now be presented with a "install alongside windows" option.

  • 1 month later...

Kan indeed confirm that those kind of softwares (although i have not tried ROS2 i particular) works fine with WSL and is somewhat what it is made for.

I usuallly use like Arduino SW via WSL instead of nativw Windows bcs the windows version sucks.

But even so, it does not hurt to upgrade the RAM eitherway... if it is possible, It´s often quite inexpensive.
