Pc shuts down

mcelias123

Hi not sure if this is the right place to troubleshoot? My friends pc shuts down under heavy load. Sometimes they can play games, like League of legends and it works for a couple hours then the pc shutsdown, but the pc doesnt "fully" shutdown they say, all fans and everything is off but a little light is on and u cant click the power button nothing happens, but when u turn it off on the power supply and wait for a couple sec it turns on again. When they tried a stress test the pc instantly turned off, would this mean a faulty psu, or could it be something else too? The pc also sometimes boot to the windows logo then stops there and just stay loading, sometimes it turns off at windows logo, and sometimes it boots into the login screen, it varies. We've tried another power cable so its not the cable.

We can't help you if you don't give full specs.

Ask your friend for the full pc specs.

It could be a faulty and old weak powersupply.

It could be overheating of something.

There are plenty of things that can cause it.

Could be something else. Could be drivers, a short somewhere. Could even be the gpu vram. But at least as for the PSU, it would either just works or it won't turn on anymore. Another is if the PSU is still working, but it's fan is not. So it shuts off when overheats or freezing due to voltage instability. So check if your psu fan is still spinning.

Pc specs:
Motherboard: ga-78lmt-usb3 rev 6.0
GPU: 1050 ti
CPU: AMD FX-6300 6-Core Processor
Ram: 12 GB Unknown (I think it's a prebuilt using some off brand ram, it doesnt say name only that. Though in task manager it says that it has up to 8GB but the name of it is "12gb" it uses 2 of 4 slots)
PSU: No idea, I can tell them to look when they wake up. But since the ram is off brand I'd guess maybe the PSU is too

Pc is fairly old, it was very slow and didn't start barely at all so we tried putting in a new ssd and re installed windows, installed new drivers and stuff its faster now, and starts more than before but still dies on load. I looked at how the pc parts performed while idle and then while having league of legends on, and it performed normally, but then when stress testing it dies instantly when u start the test. Temps on the GPU was normal around 36 degrees Celsius with League open (ingame)

Have you checked the temperatures, especially during load?

That's an old pc, and overheating could be a big problem if he has neglected cleaning it and repaste that cpu. It can turn off due to overheating.

It could be the PSU aswell.

An old cheap PSU from a prebuilt can be scetchy.
