Documents folder empty after reboot.

So I boot up my work computer to get some work done, and I notice most of my programs are missing their icon file.

I then discover that my documents folder has been all but emptied...

Proton Drive doesn't sync my Desktop and Documents folders, and I uninstalled OneDrive for this exact reason...

Any ideas what might have caused this? I haven't been able to find the files that are missing.

There was apparently a windows update today... maybe that was the cause.
Thanks I'll give that a try.

There were others who have encounter this exact same problem a while back, during the time when windows was being upgraded via windows update, and all of their files have gone missing too. Can take a look at your update history to see what was the latest update that was applied.

Do you remember how much space it was used up before the files went missing. This can help you determine if your files are still there or not, they're most likely in the temp profile folder, windows makes when the OS was being updated. Drive usage space look like a clean install, then try to use data recovery software and see if that can help recover your files.

Honestly I'm not too fussed, it is a recent install of windows anyway, and I have all my work documents to Proton Drive.
So I haven't lost any 'work', just application data it seems, just annoying really.

The icon's fix themselves after the program is reinstalled which I expected.

But I'm curious what caused it... wouldn't want it happening again or on my main PC.
