Any good recommendations? I'd like to look for good open-source alternatives for video editing before I start considering paid software.

Adobe's CS3 version of software are completely free and are still relevant for amateur work.

So, this should be good enough for starting out on youtube/ making good AVPs.

Try OpenShot but I would wait a month or 2 for the 2.0 release. 2.0 is bringing a huge amount of features. It's going to be a lot better than the Movie maker thing it seemed to be before.
