Pavel Durov announced new measures to combat illegal content on Telegram.

Using AI, the messenger's search engine was modified to prevent it from being used to sell illegal goods. Illegal content that was detected was removed.

Telegram also changed its Terms of Service and Privacy Policy so that the IP addresses and phone numbers of those who violate the rules could be disclosed to relevant authorities around the world in response to valid legal requests.

Overall this is a loss for the free and open internet.  Telegram has been a target by governments for years

Telegram is Russian. The 3 do not go together :old-eyeroll:

This says you know nothing about Telegram, Pavel Durov is very anti Putin and doesn't live in Russia because of it. In fact he got exiled from Russia for refusing to censor opposition post on VK.com. Telegram was actually banned in Russian until recently because of this.

How so?

Telegram messages are not encrypted by default, and their servers are not open source. They were never really "free and open" to begin with.

With that said, it's my main messaging app, I like it.

I meant free and open in the sense of free speech. Telegram has way better free speech then any major social media platform and I am scared we will lose that.

There's no such thing as "free speech" with moderation and unencrypted data. Laws differ across the globe, and telegram being a global app, they have to abide by all those laws or leave the country (which they won't be doing for profitable places).

If you want to say whatever you want to some other person, better do it through encrypted means in a way that it's not publicly available.

If you want to go political, this is no the place to do so, and the post will be locked if you steer torwards this way.
