Hey, So I bought an Intel i7 14th Gen CPU for a PC I built. This was before the worldwide known issue of oxidation etc. I have just downgraded it to an Intel 12th gen i9 instead, which works well with the same socket. However, I am still getting crashed things. Can someone help me troubleshoot what else I need to do?   Thankyou

Stuff crashing could simply be down to software bugs. You'll need to provide more details, e.g. what is crashing, does it write any error logs etc.

Remember to either quote or @mention others, so they are notified of your reply

Oh yeah, sorry, so most games like Fortnite or anything related to Unreal Engine. I have had a few things that are not related to unreal engine crashes too.

Some are out of memory errors but some come with no errors

AFAIK the oxidation issue was only on some 13th gen CPUs. 14th Gen shouldn't have been affected. So IMO you didn't need to replace the 14th Gen i7 if it was something you already had. As far as the 12th Gen CPU crashing, if you didn't update your chipset and other drivers/bios it's likely just software related, if you could explain the crashes in further detail that would help us narrow it down.

The first thing I'd check is your memory, the 12th gen CPUs are normally capable of less than the 13-14th gen CPUs so your settings might need to come down.

Alternatively, just turn XMP off.

By come with no errors, what do you mean? Does it BSOD? CTD?

14th gen is definitely affected, 12th isn't

Could be GPU/drivers related

Steve from GN and every other post I've researched about the oxidation issues has said it was 13th Gen units produced earlier than 2023. While the overvoltage issues affect both 13th and 14th Gen, the oxidation issue at least from what I've read from reputable sources is said to affect only 13th Gen and it was found and fixed prior to 14th Gen being manufactured.

Don't know if it's oxydation but there are definitely broken 14th gen chips

There are two separate issues with current Intel CPUs at the moment. The issue in the video you linked is the Microcode overvolting issue, not the oxidation issue.

1. The oxidation issue. Where early 13th Gen CPUs(manufactured before 2023) are having components oxidize and fail due to a manufacturing defect. It does not affect 14th Gen CPUs as according to Intel it was fixed prior to their manufacturing.

2. The Microcode issue with both 13th Gen and 14th Gen CPUs. This issue is a faulty microcode causing CPUs to be overvolted, causing instability and crashing as well as possible permanent damage. The Microcode update is releasing via a bios update in August, there have also been updates going back to early June where Intel safe settings were added to bios' to temporarily keep CPUs safe until the full Microcode update releases. This issue also only negatively affects the i9 processors. It hasn't caused any issues with the i7 or lower CPUs at least according to Intel and other users.

OP specifically says they returned it due to the oxidation issue, which is why I commented what I did, figured they'd like to know their 14th Gen wouldn't have the oxidation issue. The i7 OP had should also not be affected by the Microcode issue either. So if OP was getting crashing prior to swapping to the i9-12900K it was from something else. Since OP is still getting the crashing with the 12900K(if they were prior) it's definitely caused by something else. And thus they likely down graded from their 14700K for nothing.

I only know so much about these issues because I am affected by it with my 14900K and have been dealing with it for several months and have been doing an unhealthy amount of research.

Ok I stand corrected, very clear

Technically tho all 14th CPU still suffer from the microcode "overvolt" issue up until the Intel patch, there only are known ways to prevent it in BIOS

I didn't really realize Intel hadn't enough with 1 issue killing their CPUs 😮

Correct, all 14th Gen and 13th Gen have the Microcode bug. However, only 50% of i9 processors(both 13th and 14th Gen) have actual issues because of it. The i7 processors and lower CPUs, as well as 50% of the i9 processors released are unaffected by it. The current bios updates are preventative, the actual fix releases in August.

And yes, Intel has two major problems they're trying to combat right now. As with others, I smell reimbursements or a class action coming.

Hello, I have attached a log from Fortnite which seems to be the quickest application to crash. Will send out more from other software soon.

Since changing the CPU I have reinstalled Windows and have had no effect.

All drivers and bios are up to date as of today.

I couldn't find where to turn off  XMP  but, if I go auto things crash quicker, I kept it on XMP 1  as that's how it was before.  The computer Specs are as follows:

Motherboard - Asus Rog Strix B760-F.

CPU - Intel Core i9 12900K  (previously Intel Core i7-14700K)

RAM - 2x 32GB  DDR5 5200MHz

GPU -  ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce  RTX 4090

Power - Be Quiet! Straight Power 12 1200W

EDIT - Further to Troubleshooting I have tried a different GPU and taken 1 of 2 ram sticks out etc.

Hi Just want to update you on this. I tried using Unreal Engine which also has the same crash issues.  Tried both Windows 10 and 11 and crashes but works with Ubuntu,  likely because it is a different build of UE.  So in a way that as ruled out hardware issues.  The problem is there are plugins that needs to be used that only is available for Windows

Just still cannot figure out what the problem could be in Windows.
