Windows no Internet access

Go to solution Solved by H.B,

After reinstalling windows replacing my NIC and pulling my hair out, it was the UDM SE that was not correctly assigning an IP address to my desktop no idea why, set a Static IP for the desktop and internet connection resumed.

Hello, been trying to wrap my head around this all day, desktop has been working fine no issues until this morning booted up windows 11 and got no Internet access, network settings says no Internet access: your device can only access other devices on your local network which is not correct as I can't access my NAS or any other local device. The troubleshooter says no DNS server assigned but in properties I can see the DNS is set to DHCP and is assigned. The desktop is connected to a USW aggregation using a SFP cable and a Intel NIC. I have also tried connecting with WiFi and it has the same issue. I am able to ping the UDM gateway from the desktop but not able to load the gui on a browser nor am I able to ping anything else.

So far I have tried resetting all network settings, release flushdns renew etc. Uninstalled nic drivers, attempted a connection using onboard lan and WiFi, reinstalled network drivers, malware scan.

Thanks if you got this far

Windows just loves borking itself...

If you have the issue with both wired and wireless... We can probably rule out a faulty network chip. Though not entirely.

Have you tried with a different user account on the computer, to see if it works there ? I have seen issues pop up on specific user accounts and making a new one somehow fixes it.

You could also try a Linux live install (no need to install anything, it will boot into a live environment for you to test it). Simply get the ISO (I'm partial to Linux Mint for this) and use Rufus to create a bootable USB flash drive of it.

You should be able to check if the network works there or not at least to rule out a potential hardware issue.

Thanks for the reply, I tried a new user account same issue, I tried Linux and that allowed Internet access, my mind is boggled now 🤣

If Linux has internet access but windows does not... It is certainly a driver/windows issue.

In the extreme case, it could possibly be some malware preventing network connectivity to avoid detection.

Did you perhap install some type of firewall/security software ?

You could perhaps try booting to Safe Mode with Networking, see if it works in there.

You could also run "msconfig", chose Selective Startup and disable Load System Services/Startup items to see if that works.

You could even rollback Windows to a previous state if you have backups available.

Are you on a work domain or something like it ? If so, your network admin could've placed your desktop in isolation for some weird reason. It works through their software in windows, not through the network itself, as such it would be normal to have network access in Linux but not Windows.

I haven't installed anything since the last time I used the device, I tried a malwarebytes scan, I already tried safe mode with networking and tried uninstalling my antivirus / disabling firewalls, I've also tried the selective Startup already and unfortunately don't have anything to roll back to. It's a personal device at home so no work domain. I ordered a new nic Last night which should be here today I'll give that a try failing which I think I'll just have to try a fresh install of windows. Thanks again for your help
