Laptop not booting up

So my moms dell laptop isn't working properly. Whenever you press the power button the power indicator lights up (and stays lit up, like it should). The hard drive light turns on for about 10 seconds and turns off. Meanwhile nothing is happening on the screen, it remains completely black. I have tried replacing the hard drive with one that I believe to be working, to see if her hard drive was the issue, but the issue remains. I have no idea what is wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I guess you don't have warranty anymore? If so:

1. Unplug everything from the laptop (including battery and power supply)
2. Open up the laptop, remove the BIOS-battery, wait for at least an hour, then put it in again, and try to start the laptop.

if this doesn't help:

• Switch the RAM-Sticks around/start with only one of the Sticks plugged in etc.

 

PS: It would be helpful to know what laptop model it is
