Hey forum,

if I go ahead and buy a dell IPS monitor with diplay port and my R9 290 also supports display port, does that mean I can pretty much count on being able to use freesync in the future? I'm quite confused about the whole freesync-thing, I understand how G-sync works but I don't quite get the diplay port standards, what they do and how they are related to freesync. Could anyone educate me on that?

You'll need displayport 1.2a for adaptive sync to work. I'm not sure on how it works though so someone else can explain that.

So if I get a couple of these

I'll be good to go? Specs say they have DP 1.2a.

Well, not exactly. Adaptive sync is still an optional feature of Displayport 1.2a. Plus, it has come out very recently so it might not be on current monitors.

I'd assume that if a monitor supported adaptive sync, it would advertise it.

ok, I was going to wait anyway, I guess I'll make my choice when the software for it is released and the whole thing becomes a little clearer.

You'll need a monitor with the actual Adaptive-Sync logo advertised on the box (so to speak). Not all 1.2a monitors will have it, as it does require some extra hardware inside the monitor.

any idea when those will be available and if the additional hardware will make them similarly expensive as G-Sync monitors?

It's too early to say. My guess would be a few months minimum. The hardware will probably add some extra cost but I don't know how much. I predict that they will be expensive when the first few release simply because the manufacturer can charge a premium being the first ones to have it out, regardless of how much the hardware actually increase the price.

I don't want to speak too fast, but from my understanding adaptive sync is a feature designed for laptop displays initially. Usually DisplayPort powered internal displays, don't have a controller, as it is a power saving property of DisplayPort (well, iDP (internal DisplayPort)). So assuming a monitor supports it, it should be technically cheaper to make the monitor. Not saying that they won't maximize profits and charge you a premium.
