Thinking about getting a Oled Steamdeck

My reason for asking here is because in not super uptodate on the handheld market.

For me the price and for what i want to use it for i think its the best solution(older AAA games and newer indies) I dont travel, i will near 100% just be using it on the couch or similar so i can play while my girlfriend plays on the tv.

And I have a PC for heavier titles.

Questions are:

Is a new one coming in the next 4-6 months?

Are there others coming out that seem really cool?

Is there a reason to NOT get this one and instead go with a more expensive Ally or similar?

No, Valve has previously stated Steam Deck 2 won't be out until 2025 at the earliest, if we believe the designer and how the process works...

My GF loves her OLED Deck, she'll play on the couch in my office while I play on the PC.  We play New World, Palia, Enshrouded so far and it handles them very well.

I'd recommend one to anyone who wants to play while not at a desk.  100%.

I mean it really just comes down to a few things, most of which can only be answered by you.

Do you actually have a need for it, or is it just a new shiny gadget to play with for a bit. If its just playing on the couch, id say your better off not buying it.

Id have your computer where you play your games, and separate that for couch time and chilling with the gf. If you feel as if you also want to play something then maybe consider it but not sure how often they play and you just play on the computer.

Is a new one coming out? Unlikely, probably next year at the earliest.

Others coming out in that price range? Not really, most handhelds have certain things well but most comes down to what do you value, and for some of their costs its simply not worth it for just an every now and then couch device. Some are neat but for 800-1200$ for a handheld device like it, thats really not worth it.

Do not buy ASUS products at this time, their CS, Warranty, and such have all been shown to be pretty abysmal and the ALLY has known issues.

I'd say it depends. It can be rather comfortable just playing on the Steam Deck laid back on the couch.

Really depends on the types of games you like to play. Personally I find the Deck to be best suited to 2D titles (Stardew Valley, Hades, Ori, Tyrian, Raptor, …) or slower paced 3D games (The Witness). Could also be down to the fact that I've never really been a console player, so for 3D I really want keyboard and mouse, rather than controllers. With some tweaking its battery will also last fairly long with such titles, since you can often reduce refresh rate and lower CPU power etc.

The other nice thing is the ability to put it into standby whenever you want, then continue playing where you left off. Great when you've got a few minutes to kill, but can't continue playing until the next save point (e.g. next day in Stardew Valley)
