Hi all, would an AIO or air cooler be best for a CPU like this? I have been asked to spec a PC for my company (already got the rest of the build, just unsure about CPU cooling). I have heard the Arctic Liquid Freezer II is good? Or would I be better off using a beefy tower cooler?

Thanks

EDIT: The CPU is a Ryzen 9 7900X3D, completely forgot to say

What CPU are you talking about ?

VR don't need a cooler it needs a headset 🙂

Oh my god I am stupid hang on

A cpu needs a cooler just to keep in temp. Both kinds do that 😛

What cpu are you getting.

Actually I'd transfor this into a whole build post instead of just a cpu cooler single part at a time question.

you sure about this? for more stable performance i'd recommend a 7800x3d so you don't have the issue of your 3d application bouncing between the x3d and non x3d cores and causing performance issues

gaming system: Intel core I9 12900ks / biostar Z690A valkyrie / 4x8gb corsair Vengeance @3333Mhz ram / RX 7900XTX pulse gpu / Thermalright peerless assassin 140 /Coolermaster Qube 500 case / Be Quiet Dark Power Pro 12 1500w power supply

laptop: Dell xps 9510, 3.5k OLED, i7 11800h, rtx 3050 ti, 2x16gb DDR4 @ 3200Mhz, 1TB main drive, 2TB add in ssd

Ryzen 9 7900X3D. I've heard these run a little hot so was just wondering if an AIO is more suitable than a tower cooler?

Downgrade?

yes but then all the cores have 3D v-cache

7900X3D doesn't have them all on 3D? Never knew that

8 of them do and the other 4 don't, same goes for the 7950x3d

So, the X3D are a weird mixed:

So, the 3D V-Cache, makes the silicon of the CPU Thicker, so the CPU Cores run at higher temps.

That being said, the CPU Overall does NOT use a ton of power.  The 7900X3D uses less than 100W of CPU Power.  (For comparison, a 13600K or 14600K can easily draw more than double that.)

Any decent air cooler can handle the power / heat output by a 7900X3D.

So, like, a PA 120 SE is awesome, and is usually under 40 bucks.

But realize, the CPU Cores will /still/ be 80C+ most likely, due to how the CPUs are made.

Nope:  It's 6 and 6.

It's why the 7900 is so cheap, compared to the other two.  Only 6 cores with 3D V-Cache.

Seems like a scam to me, pay more get less wtf

So the worse cpu on paper gets better performance?

it was a documented issue by many outlets including ltt when ryzen 7000 came out,
to be fair though they may have fixed their scheduling issues and it may be fine now

Thanks for the info, budget isn't really a thing, might treat them to a Noctua or something

Edit: it seems as though this is the only game where the performance is worse

also garbage ihs is to blame cause its too thick then you have the cache ontop of that for the cache ccd hence why you see 20c+ temp drop with direct die

should still run ok when undervolted though since the ihs gets overwhelmed at higher power draws hence the 95c temps for x cpus (horrible out of the box settings that draw way too much power) and the non x chips that run really cool even with the stock cooler

I'm confused, your application is VR but you are looking at the CPU here? Isn't VR performance going to be primarily a function of the capabilities of the GPU? I.e. not sure these metrics should necessarily be the basis of your decision.

Well yeah, but still need to decide which cpu would give the best overall performance for the gaming rig. Will probably only a few fps but I would still like to maximise performance
