As long as you can make the power coming into your PC correct, use any means you want.

Do you work on your PC during outages?  is this a need or a want.  if a need, try it.  If a want, god no I wouldn't even put a car batter near my machine.

the reason UPS'es are expensive, is because they are designed to run 24/7 and be able to take over the load at a moment's notice. a separate inverter will still mean that a power outage takes out your computer, you then need to plug it in the inverter and start it up again.

on that note.. most cheap inverters are utter garbage. as it turns out making something good costs money.

as for the replacement batteries.. there's two strong suggestions for you:

- most of them just have regular standard lead-acid batteries below the "manufacturer's label" on the battery. when the battery goes jello you pull it out, peel the marketing label off, see what's underneath, order that, and call it a day.

- if you want to run off a car battery to have 'all day battery life'.. either buy a UPS with an external battery connector, or just remove the battery from a regular office UPS and run the leads out to a pair of car batteries (pair because you really want a 24 volt unit)

As long as the inverter is full sine and can support the PC's power draw, it should be okay.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

it's just that those inverters tend to be.. expensive.

but that said, the setup proposed in the video is really the way to go if you dont feel comfortable modifying a UPS to handle a bigger battery.

I have mercury UPS and original batteries are gone. I tried ultracell and others they are fake brand with short power and life

my usual go-to brand is CSB, they have a series specificly for UPS use.

i've ran an ultracell once, and it did fairly well, defenately better than kung long..
