Hi there, my friend is building a pc and I am trying to help him out. He recently ordered ram that has intel xmp. He is using an AMD CPU. Are the two compatible, or will the ram only work with intel CPUs and motherboards?

yes they'll be fine. AMD has their counterpart DOCP and even if that doesn't work then you can set the ram speed manually to it's higher speed in bios

Every AMD motherboard that can set memory settings above JEDEC spec is capable of reading an Intel XMP profile. It will come down to the specific kit for whether there will be issues or not, though as long as the speeds are reasonable it should be fine.

*Certain Vengeance LPX kits on certain bios revisions paired with zen/zen+/zen2*

Yeah, as long as it's a fairly recent revision, it'll be fine.
