Buying advice for new GPU

SergiB

Hi there!

So, the usual question. Which GPU to buy right now?

Some data about my current setup:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
  • RAM: 32 GB DDR4-3600
  • SSDs: Samsung SSD 980 Pro & 970 Evo Plus.
  • PSU: Seasonic Prime TX850

My monitor is a Gigabyte M32U, so that means 4K and up to 144 Hz. My current GPU is a RTX 2060 which can barely handle some basic gaming.

I don't play a lot of games, really. I don't have much time for that, unfortunately. Otherwise I would have upgraded the GPU by now. I was thinking about waiting for the next generation of GPUs but that seems like it will take a while now. Still, I usually like FPS and role playing first person games. So I guess I need a beefy one.

I think GPUs will be useful for local AI acceleration any time soon. I already played a bit with Jan although it's very slow on my system. So, I also want a card that would be useful for that down the road. Still, not at any cost. I could always sell the card in a couple of years, and then buy whatever fits at that moment. Why do I say all that? Because perhaps I'm better with an AMD card for now (due to cost/performance and amount of RAM) but an NVIDIA card will have better AI performance down the road. But then that could be in a couple of years and the ROI is too far into the future.

Anyway, sorry about the digression, it's hard to make my mind about that.

So, please share your thoughts and recommendations. 🙏

I don't really have a hard limit, but please don't recommend "just buy an 4090". I'm trying to do a smart purchase here. 😅

No 4090s are awful price to performance beasts, ill give you a few at different price budgets

$300

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/GDvdnQ/asrock-radeon-rx-6750-xt-12-gb-challenger-pro-oc-video-card-rx6750xt-clp-12go

$500

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/rfV2FT/asrock-challenger-oc-radeon-rx-7800-xt-16-gb-video-card-rx7800xt-cl-16go

$700 - NVidia

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/vTbTwP/zotac-gaming-trinity-oc-geforce-rtx-4070-ti-12-gb-video-card-zt-d40710j-10p

$700 - AMD

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/3BQcCJ/sapphire-pulse-radeon-rx-7900-xt-20-gb-video-card-11323-02-20g

$900

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/gCBG3C/asrock-phantom-gaming-oc-radeon-rx-7900-xtx-24-gb-video-card-rx7900xtx-pg-24go

$1000

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/VxjRsY/gigabyte-windforce-v2-geforce-rtx-4080-super-16-gb-video-card-gv-n408swf3v2-16gd

For the $700 the AMD is actually slightly better performing but lacks the RTing, extra features and AI capabilities of Nvidia

The 900$ and $1000 is similar, the 7900xtx is actually on par or better than the 4080S in gaming but lacks the above

Generally AMD are much better price-performance which is why most of my recommendations are as such, if you want more lower end/lower cost GPUs or a more constrained budget i can break down further and give some recommendations for like 250, 300, 350 etc for example

I want something that can do decent 4K gaming consistenly above 60 fps. Preferrably around 90 fps. I know AMD are better price-performance, but what about using DLSS? Can just a 4070 Ti Super using DLSS3 be a good combination for that? Maybe even something lower in the 4070 tier will do?

About AMD's FSR I haven't heard really good things, at least comparted to DLSS.

FSR2.1 is pretty decent, its the one i mainly use (7800xt) and it really depends on the game, lies of P is an easy 170fps with HDR, FSR2.1 quality with 100% sharpness and maxed setting @1440p but cyberpunk struggles with 120fps at 70% sharpness and all the above

The FPS's will be decently CPU bound probably as with things like COD, Valorant, CS2, but more story based games will have much more detailed landscapes etc and be heavily GPU bound, id recommend 4070Ti or 7900xt or above for 4K, ill fire in a benchmark for you to see here

This should be a good breakdown of a lot of games in 4k between the 2 cards listed above and will give you a feel for about 4k60fps cards

My config is same than yours but with a 7900XTX, I play at UW 1440 on a 120Hz monitor so have usually 100fps+ in anything Ultra

So to play confortably at 4K in RPG type games you need at least a 4080 or 7900XTX as well

Get the 4080 if you want good RT and more AI stuff, atm I would buy one instead of a 7900XTX as price is now a more "affordable" $1000 (plus it's "Super" but that don't change anything really)

When I bought mine the 7900XTX was 1000 some but the 4080 was $1200+.

Thanks!

So there's not really a difference between 4080 and 4080 Super? Just pick the cheapest one for a major brand?
