so basically my ssd wd green 2280 goes to 100% util for no reason. Crystal disk info says its in good health with nothing really failing and only 1.3k hours. But doing simple tasks like opening chrome small files like pdf's it goes to 100% and i don't really know how to fix it even though i have searched preety much everywhere .

specs:

ryzen 1600

Asrock a320m-hdv

16gb ram (mismatched sticks not the best but it works)

gtx 1050ti

The WD Green line are DRAM-less SSDs, meaning that doing system IO work can overwhelm them quite easily when used as the OS drive. If the issue isn't that your drive is more than 80% full, and thus struggling to find places to write to, then it could just be that the drive is that slow sometimes.

Something to try for free could be updating the BIOS on your motherboard. Newer BIOS revisions after the initial release of A320 boards added features for SSDs that support using some system RAM as a cache, which greatly improves IO performance if the SSD also supports that feature. Looking at the support page for your motherboard, the relevant BIOS version is probably 4.70 from 2018, as that mentions improving M.2 compatibility, and that was around that time that that feature was added for NVMe drives.

I will note that this is unlikely to fix the problem - odds are, the SSD doesn't support this feature and will continue to operate as it does now. But if you don't have the money for a new SSD, it is something you could try. Plus, BIOS updates also come with other stability and feature improvements that could matter to you - for example, if you ever wanted to upgrade your CPU to a Ryzen 5000 series, you'll need to be on at least version 7.30 for it to work.

If HMB isn't functioning, it could be a problem. With it though, DRAM-less NVMe is perfectly fine for a consumer platform. I have three WD SN770's (DRAM-less) and they're fantastic.

Ryzen 7 7800x3D -  Asus RTX4090 TUF OC- Asrock X670E Taichi - 32GB DDR5-6000CL30 - SuperFlower 1000W - Fractal Torrent - Assassin IV - 42" LG C2 - Windows 11 Pro
