Boot up and mash the F8 key (think that's the right one). Boot into safe mode and do a full scan with Malwarebytes.

So my friends computer has windows 8.1, it kept saying Watchdog_Violation, then he followed something off google now when he going to log in on the log in screen it takes his password then where it would normally boot the start menu it just black screens. can anyone help?

Might be infected with some kind of software.

Cannot do System restore, it was saying Insert media.
