GPU clock drops to nothing while gaming

Go to solution Solved by SpookyCitrus,

Go into device manager and disable the Intel iGPU, see if the issue persists. If it doesn't you can just leave it disabled in device manager or go into the bios and disable it there. It should already be disabled by default with a dedicated GPU installed but Windows can do some weird stuff where it will try to function like a laptop and split the load between the two even on a desktop. I'd check that first.

Hey all, recently I upgraded my monitor to a 4k 144hz from 1080p 144hz because I found a very good deal. But now for every game except minecraft my gpu is dropping clocks down to idle speeds when switching "scenes" in games and stays for a random amount of time from what I can tell and my temps are fine.

Some examples are is dying in overwatch, and how it switches to the death cam; loading into a new location in Layers of Fear; redeploying in Helldivers 2; or being revived/sometimes even pulling up my ghost in Destiny 2 causes it.

because of the clock drops to idle speeds, my fps also drops to ~20fps from 100+fps. I've tried using DDU, disabling all my overclocks, using sfc /scannow and image repair tool and nothing helped. What could be happening. Thanks in advance.

Specs:
RTX 3080 Ti

i7-13700k

64GB DDR5 6000mhz trident z
Corsair RM850x psu

all of the games are on m.2 drives and my boot drive is on a sata ssd.

Very strange!

What happens when you hit the card with a continuous and uninterrupted 100% load?

Use something like Furmark for this. 3DMark is a good stress testing tool but it has frequent pauses as each scene changes. Furmark just runs continuously.

ran it for ~25mins and no frame drops at all

what do you want it to do, its a black loading screen, no work is being done by the gpu so it lowers to idle.

The thing is that the fps stays low after the loading finishes and I can do something again

Update bios version, and also update VBios version ( graphics card ) turn off xmp, remove bios cmos battery and then put it back, if you are using pci-e x16 4.0 slot, then try and use pci-e x16 3.0 slot,

My bios(es) are the latest version and I've reset the mobo bios multiple times by taking the battery out and in again. And the thing is my mobo only has a single x16 4.0 slot the other one is 8x 3.0

oh wow this seems to have solved my issue, it's so weird that switching a monitor makes windows use the igpu
