5 inch in height? 5 inch is 12.70cm, which does not exist in a smartphone. I think you're looking at something that is roughly the same height as the SE 2022, which would be 14.0cm or 5.5 inch total height. Screen size is very different since the SE 2022 is using a rectangle while modern smartphones fill the entire body with screen.

Have a look at the Zenfone 10 and Galaxy S22/23/24, those are only a few mm taller than the iPhone SE 2022 while having a much bigger screen, so I'd say they should suit you

I was looking to buy a new phone (for everyday carry) and I just have 1 requirement :

the phone must be compact to fit in my pocket without hindering me while walking or sitting (
ideally below 5inches total size )

After digging the internet I can't find any viable options other than the:

iPhone SE 2022 (overpriced in my opinion) and I don't like IOS)

Can anyone suggest any modern  Android alternative that is not a complete piece of E wast ?

Ideally below $400(usd)

A 5 inch screen diameter or 5 inch total diameter?

The iPhone SE 2022 has a small screen relative to body size, something you could look at are Galaxy S22/23/24, Pixel 7a, Asus Zenfone 10, Xiaomi 13, Sony Xperia 1/5/10 V.

Good option but for 600$ it is a bit too much

Get a Motorola RAZR.

It'll fit in whatever pocket you want and they're like $499.

You'll have to get technical with LineageOS.  It's not difficult, just study how to install a custom "read only memory" (poor naming) system, on Sony devices.

Warning, Sony devices of the X XZ, and Z (Of those, X is newest, Z is older) the screen brightness tops out around 500 nits.  For me, this is not nearly enough, not even close, for reading the screen outside in sunligtt.  660 nits is the absolute minimum (iPhone 6s / galaxy note 3 brightness on max auto) for me.

GSMarena has great data for "nits" screen brightness measurements.  Sony XZ1 compact, a 4.6" display, goes up to 600 nits, which might be almost enough, and some may go up to 640.

What's great about Sony smartphones is the bootloader is unlockable on ALL devices, yes, all of them.  Sony provides instructions on their website for all device models.

This means, using LineageOS, you can forever as long as android exists, upgrade LineageOS even yourself if you had to, but many people on https://xdaforums.com/ will continue releasing updated android LineageOS systems you can install.

This means, it is no longer necessary to constantly upgrade your hardware to access supposedly more secure, updated software.  In other words, you don't have to go along with the phone upgrade hamster wheel every three or four years to keep getting security updates.

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

Just get f.lux [Link removed due to forum rules] so your screen isn't bright white at night, a golden orange in place of stark 6500K bluish white.

Dark Reader addon for webpages.  Pick any color you want for both background and text (background and foreground page elements).  Enable the preview mode on desktop for Firefox and Chrome addon, by clicking the dark reader addon settings, Choose dev tools amd click preview mode.

NoScript or EFF's privacy badger addons can block many scripts and websites that would load and track you, possibly halving page load time!

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.  Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.
