4080 drivers causing freeze; only works in x8/x8 PCIe mode

Hey Everyone,

I just finished a new build with a 4080 Super founders edition and gigabyte z790 aorus pro X.

Everything was working fine and stable until I installed the NVIDIA drivers—the pc became unresponsive to keyboard and mouse input and I had to force reboot. I was able to get past the login screen but in about 5 seconds the same thing happens.

The only way I found it to run stable is by forcing 8x8 on the PCIe slot through the bios PCIe bifurcation, which of course I don’t want to do.

Found a similar thread but no real solution.

I already have:

  • updated BIOS
  • tried both versions of the 4080 Super drivers
  • Enabled native ASPM
  • tried with multiple displays
  • not using riser, GPU is direct to top PCIe 5.0x16 slot.

I’m thinking of just exchanging the mobo for ROG strix gaming A WiFi II (nothing is able to recognize my RAM’s RGB, but that’s hardly an issue) but it’s a whole lot of work for something that IMO shouldn’t be an issue.

Any ideas or thoughts you may have are welcomed. Thanks in advance!

You're not using a riser?

Nope—direct into the top slot.

EDIT: Updated original post for clarity on this.
