Hi, does a cheap pcie to m.2 slot adapter work if my pc has only a m.2 slot?

Yes, they work. They just change the form factor of the connector.

However, these cards do not add support for NVMe. So if your PC doesn't support NVMe SSDs yet, then it won't either with a card like this. Also important to note is that you should always keep the number of available PCI-e lanes in mind. Installing additional PCI-e devices will take up additional lanes and can cause SATA and other PCI-e devices to be disabled or run at a slower speed.

It works perfectly, I've put my 2nd NVMe in a PCie adapter to get it out of the hot zone below my big boy GPU, it's 20C cooler !

Yet verify first you indeed have a free x4 (logical, not overall size of the slot) PCie slot that operates at adequate PCie gen speed for the drive (Gen3 to Gen5 atm), and that you don't have to share the bandwidth with some other card or drive (I do have a Wifi/BT card but it doesn't need much, less than 150MBps anyway so np)
