Minecraft Server

Ebay it is, then. You could look for one of those 1L PCs, they are small, somewhat power efficient yet powerful (if you go with one of the Ryzen options, the 2400G would be my pick - difficult to find for 100USD tho). You could also get an old business machine (Dell Optiplex, HP ProLiant or whatever they are called), ask around if anyone has one for you to tinker with. Just keep in mind that those will draw quite some power that will heat your room and likely cost more just for electricity than renting a server.

Also: Be damn sure that you know what you are doing when you are opening your home internet up to the world, another reason to rent a server instead - it gets hacked, you lose that server. Your home network gets hacked? Good luck. That might be unlikely, but something to think about (and also mention to your parents).

I would really recommend renting a server, but you do you.

Hey LTT Forum, I’m looking to start my own Minecraft Server. I’ve been running a server through a 3rd party server host for around 3 years now, but I want to have my own to save money and have more control over what happens to it. When doing some research, I figured out that old systems can be bought on ebay or facebook marketplace for cheap. What I am looking for is the best system under 100 dollars to run a Minecraft server. I am not against using ebay or facebook marketplace or buying a prebuilt and upgrading it. What are my best options?

If you include the cost for electricity into your calculation, it's unlikely you will do so by running your own hardware.

I would recommend to rent a cheap VPS instead. You get the same amount of control, but you don't need to worry about the hardware. Plus: no hassle with your ISP potentially blocking ports and likely better upstream then you would have at home.

Also, if someone decides to DOS your server (or similar shenanigans), it won't affect your private internet connection.

Hey guys, I’ll make this quick. I have a $100 budget and I want to buy a server that can run my Minecraft Server. Once I have the server up and running, I need a way to let people outside of my network join, and have that method be secure. I’ve heard that port forwarding isn’t safe, but if it is and I've heard wrong, then I’d be open to doing it. I need a recommendation on what to buy and then a way for people to join. Thank you!

Do you have an old PC kicking around, what type of minecraft experience do you want (just vanilla, modded, loads of scripts), how many players, is your internet good enough to host?

I will find your Laptop thread and I will recommend an ITX build instead

I do not have one sadly. And I’m looking to run a Fabric Modded Server, but with only lightweight mods like voice chat and performance mods

Yeah nah, sounds like you would be better off just renting a server. Safer, easier and likely cheaper, now and in the long run (unless your electricity is free - living with your parents does not count as "free")

  • 4 weeks later...

I would probably recommend a Raspberry Pi. I myself have one and it runs a Minecraft Server. With proper software you could definitely have a secure connection to your server, but I know nothing about it. One thing that could be interesting is a plugin from https://playit.gg/. This Plugin allows you to get a free domain, that players can use to join your server. I only have the free version but there is a payed version for almost no cost. Hope I could help and good luck!
