BlackBerry's last bastion in Indonesia seems to be a resounding success.

BlackBerry unveiled and sold out it's very first sub $200 device, the Z3 code named Jakarta, in Indonesia on its opening day over the weekend. CEO John Chen decided to launch the Z3 in Indonesia because the smartphone maker still holds a substantial following in the country. In 2011, BlackBerry enjoyed 43% share of smartphone market in Indonesia. However, sales were hammered by the low-priced Android phones, which dropped BB’s overall share to 14% by 2013. Chen is counting on Indonesia to revive BlackBerry’s sales.

The Z3 features some pretty solid specs for a sub $200:

  • 5-inch 24-bit color LCD display with 540 x 960 pixels
  • 1.5GB RAM and 8GB internal storage capacity
  • 1.2GHz dual-core processor
  • 2650 mAh battery
  • 5MP main camera with 5X zoom and autofocus feature.
  • The front camera is a 1.1MP with 3x digital zoom and fixed focus.

In addition, the Z3 Jakarta Edition has ‘Jakarta’ written on the back of the phones, which were custom-made for the Indonesian market. The Canadian firm will also launch the model in India in the coming months, where the company’s smartphone sales have slumped significantly.

Is this what BlackBerry needs to turn itself around? Or is it delaying the inevitable? Keep in mind BlackBerry beat wallstreet's expectations and posted a much smaller loss than expected as it turns itself around with new CEO John Chen.
