i have an odd gpu problem. my gpu will randomly get stuck at 220mhz under load if i overclock the core by for example +100 than my gpu will happily sit at 320mhz. i have use ddu to use completely new drivers and i have used diffract versions with no luck a simple restart of my pc will not fix it but i can fix this by resetting my gpu which will bring me back to normal core clock well at least until it starts again than i have to reseat. i expect it to be temp related as its happening more as summer is getting hotter and hotter. also this gpu has had issues in the past with thermals which new thermal pads and thermal paste. currently under load i sit at 80c and hotspot at about 91c
My Specs
R7 5800X3D
RTX 3080
32GB 3600mhz

Could be a hardware issue it seems? Have you tried another GPU in your system to see the problem still occurs? Is software up to date & correct drivers installed for yor Graphics Card? Is Air-flow good in the case?

Do you have custom fan curves setup? A lot of GPUs run fans rather slowly stock. And as @code_ said, how is case airflow?

System specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D [-30 PBO all core]

GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX NITRO+

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB 32GB 6000MHz CL32 DDR5

Storage: 2TB SN850X, 1TB SN850 w/ heatsink, 500GB P5 Plus (OS Storage)

Case: 5000D AIRFLOW

Cooler: Thermalright Frost Commander 140

PSU: Corsair RM850e

Case Fans: Fractal Prisma (120 x6, 140 x3) + 2x40mm fans

my case is the fractal design north and im using the stock fans at the front. all my gpu drivers are upto date. my old gpu has never skipped a beat and still works fine in this pc form what i can tell. the issue with my currant gpu has remind even after my cpu upgrade going from a i7 8700k to my R7 5800x3D.

Yea i do i have it so it will hit 100% fan speed when it hit 65c

Oh wow, must be noisy, and thats hot for 100%, any exhaust fans or possibility to add a fan or 2 to the mesh side panel with the bracket they come with to provide more air? Other than that im not sure why it hits rock bottom clock speed but i will say it is TOASTY for 100% fan speed

I would recommend trying this...

Try making sure the case is getting enough air and the computer is in a room where its well-ventilated. It could be a temperature issue. Try:

  • Moving the case to a new room with a cool environment/with good ventilation
  • Ensure fans or no dust are inside the case.
  • Try not overclocking the GPU and see what it does.
  • Avoid using the PC in excessive heat conditions.
  • Adding enough fans to ensure it can remove hot air from the case.
  • Ensure all case fans are spinning properly and checking the RPM.

Are you able to boot into windows/use whatever os your using?

So the temps when the core clock is this low are fine but when the GPU is running normally it will be sitting at about 80c and 91c on the not spot. I don't have the mesh side panels I have the glass one. I do need to add an exhaust

I don't run an overclock I was just pointing out that GPU can still run at higher clocks when it like this but It will not on it's own. For example I can push the I've clock to about +800mhz and run games almost normal but I don't as Idk if that's a good idea. I'm in probably one of the better spots of the house but our summer here is already hitting 42c. Yes I'm able to boot into windows just fine

Components look fine from what I can see.

Try adding an additional exhaust fan. to see if that solves the issue. The only issue(s) I could see maybe there isn't enough space for the GPU to properly ventilate by the cooling tower/heat sink for the CPU or the way the fans are on the heatsink (are the fans the correct way around (one side draws air in and one pushes one out). I could be wrong here.

That's also a lot of sag, I'd definitely get something to support that, could be pulling itself from the socket, also why the reseat could be temporarily fixing the problem, with fans running that hard thed also be slightly acting as propellers pulling it down harder again, and I'm assuming you've removed screws because of constant repeating, sort sag and rescue and see then? I'd also try not to run it without screws as the entire weight of gpu is resting on pcie bracket

Thats some sherlock holmes level of deduction with the helicopter fans....

I suspect its a bit fictional though.

Oh it wont be much at all, near enough nominal, especially as the pass through it pretty small, but any extra downward force at all isnt beneficial
