I need some help finding a power supply for my nephews computer.

The power supply I got based on pc part picker should have worked, but it only had 1 motherboard power cable and only the y cable version of the pcie power which was not good enough to run the system.

The power supply has to fit in the fractal pop xl air which has a bit of a tight fit. It also needs to have power cables that can power both a 3070ti and an ASUS ROG STRIX B650-A GAMING WIFI 6E.

I'm having a hard time finding a power supply that is 850watts, small enough to fit the case and has the correct power cables.

Any help is much appreciated!

Most boards will run fine with only 1 8 pin installed.

What do you mean by y cable version? 6+2 pin?

Common build advice: 1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

fractal pop xl air

uses ATX power supply format, which is pretty standard,

you should be fine with either good 750W PSU or high quality 650W PSU, for example Gold rated Corsair RMe (or RMx) or Gold rated Thermaltake Toughpower

I'd recommend 700W+ PSU for headroom though

So this motherboard has the regular 24-pin, an 8-pin, and a 4-pin port. The power supply I originally got did not have the 4 pin cable. I am trying to have everything set up and connected, just in case if down the road my nephew wants to upgrade he does not have to get a new power supply.

Is 700W+ enough for a 3070TI? I know the 3080TI needs at least 850W is it that far of a difference?

you could try only fitting the 8pin on the motherboard and leaving the 4pin not plugged, and see if that works, because I think it should, what's the CPU on the Motherboard do you know?

Full specs for the system without power supply are:

CPU: AMD Ryzen™ 9 7900X3D 12-Core

CPU Cooler: CORSAIR CW-9060058-WW iCUE H100i RGB ELITE

Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B650-A GAMING WIFI

Ram: CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) 6000MHz

GPU: EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti FTW3 Ultra Gaming

Case: Fractal Design Pop XL Air RGB

Memory Drives: SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD 1TB and Seagate BarraCuda 4TB Internal Hard Drive HDD

____

I will try with the 8-pin alone and see if that works. Is the 700W enough for the above?

it's likely if you're not doing any CPU overclocking, do you know the model of the PSU?

Based on this I was thinking the new PSU could be the RM750x SHIFT 80 PLUS Gold Fully Modular ATX Power Supply. Either 750 or 850 watt. That give him wiggle room if he wants to upgrade down the line his gpu or something

Do you think that has the cables and power for this system?

More important question because of the location of the modular board 'is the PSU compatible with the case'?

The RM750x SHIFT 80 PLUS Gold Fully Modular ATX Power Supply should fit, I think. height is the only concern, but it seems thinner than other PSU. ‎11.6 x 9.5 x 5.2 inches

The extra 4 pin is only really for if you want to use a 7950X with a watercooling loop and overclock the hell out of it , It'll be perfectly fine with just the 8 pin.

I have some gripes with your component choice but it's too close to Christmas to fix and I'm sure he will be happy with it.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

I found a PSU that fits and works.

Well it did.. But it failed after 10 minutes of being on and then no power anymore. So getting it replaced and trying again.
