7800X3D offset mount

Hi all,

Im currently running a 7800X3D with a Thermalright frost commander, and planning to upgrade to an Assassin IV for aesthetic purposes and noise reduction in future. Im wondering if an offset bracket would also help with this? Lowerings temps slightly and resulting in a quieter fan speed for similar temps, i know it will be a minor change, just wondering if its worth the cost? As its not a noctua cooler, am i, 1. still able to buy and use an appropriate noctua offset mount for my cooler? or 2. will i have to buy a thermal grizzly one? The only issue with the thermal grizzly one is its quite expensive for what it will achieve coming in at £29 or almost $37.

Any thoughts?

Nothing wrong with aesthetics being a priority, but it seems like you don't really want to spend anymore since you came hear asking. Even if you made all these changes you may not end up with anything being noticeably quieter. Which version of the Frost Commander did you get? There is a black, and grey version. Also 4, and 5 heat pipes.

I'm in Canada so the cost for a new Frost Commander/Spirit is about 2.5 to 4 times as much for a Assassin IV new or open box product I see available to me. I don't feel it is worth paying that much to try to get the absolute best aesthetics over cooling. Assassin IV is fairly new so it's way over priced.

Have you considered just replacing the fans with Noctua? How about adding a 3D printed cover over the heat sink and fans? Do you really want show to off your computer or just need to make it quieter.

Frost Commander is the 5 pipe variant, Frost spirit is the 4 pipe. I have the commander currently, the deepcool assassin IV runs slightly quieter and cools better for the same fan speed. FC140 was just over £40 (70CAD) and the assassin is £90 (150CAD), so pretty much just double. I want to both show it off and be quieter. FC140 is one of the louder air coolers on the market i believe. And the Assassin IVs fan offset (as in fans in middle and rear as opposed to traditional) allows the RAM to be shown, the FC140 completely covers it. I have Gkill trident RGB ram, which ties in nicely with the 90 degree 24pin adapter with a light bar on it and Nitro+ 7800xt

I am pretty set on getting the assassin IV but as its not necessary it will be further down the line when i have have enough very disposable income

Tis moreso would the noctua cooler offset work with other coolers as its only about £4 (7 CAD) and if not would the thermal grizzly be worth almost 50 CAD for the same thing?

Havent bought it yet, but yes, i love the look of the Assassin IV, the current coolers fans also block PC components, and will be quieter into the bargain

again, main question is about the offset bracket, not necessary but will a noctua bracket fit another cooler or are noctuas measurements non-standard?

Have you tried running just the center fan with your FC140? That way you can still see your ram.. I can run my 58X3D with no fans on that cooler in a stock Torrent Compact fan configuration. Maybe you can too.

I have an Assassin IV on a 7800x3D but with any cooler, noise is up to you, the owner.

I see this concern a lot but most often people are just using whatever the fan controller says to do by default.

Default fan profiles are entirely too aggressive so you simply have to change them. This cooler is so overkill that I basically run a flat 40% PWM unless I see 85c which is rarely.

I would touch that unit inappropriately when you weren't looking.

You sure do get a lot more space in the full sized Torrent.. might have to get one.

I have my own fan curve setup, admittedly it is a bit aggresive,  and can probably be lowered, but it is less than the default fan curve at idle, still, it is quite loud compared to a lot of other coolers at the same temps and fan speeds. And the fans themselves are just quite loud compared to other fans of a similar caliber

I can post my current setup if youd like to see the issue i have with the fan blocking RAM, fan setup, available space and airflow etc.

I am about to pull my 360 out and go back to an air cooler. I was going to do PS120SE, but I will go with FC140 instead I think. Trying to decide between white and grey.. probably go with white..

I can post my current setup if youd like to see the issue i have with the fan blocking RAM, fan setup, available space and airflow etc.

Regarding the offset frame from Noctua, I would just write to them and ask. Tell them the cooler you want to use it with (that you have it), and see what they say. If they respond: "Dunno", then say, ok, "could I see a diagram showing the hole positiions with measurements so I can check to see if they match my  cooler?"

  1. Decrease your fan curve to the point where it doesn't bother you.
  2. Look at @WallacEngineering's shrine (thread) to the Assassin IV - I believe there might be some info in there that will show you the challenges with getting the most out of it. Personally, I think it looks like exactly what it is - a boring cube.
  3. As @freeagent pointed out, you can remove the fan that overhangs the RAM. Depending on your setup, it might be possible to shift them both to the left or, if you mounted it incorrectly, flip it so it's like this:image.png.4da46d52766b5c008366c024f6c7df31.png
  4. Another solution (I'm taking stabs in the dark since I haven't seen photos) is to increase the number of case fans to feed more cool air into the CPU cooler.
  5. Finally, swap the FC's fans for something that's quieter. I don't have all my inventory fully filled in (I keep getting distracted), but...
The Arctic P12 Max has 4.35 mmAq and 137.69 CFM at 25.3 dBA (they claim) or the Asus ROG Strix Whisper-quiet PWM Fan XF120A1, which has 3.07 mmAq and 62.5 CFM at 22.5 dBA on the left, and maybe the bgears b-Ice 140mm BG01572, which has 3.2 mmAq and 83 CFM at 29 dBA. There's also the Noctua A4 F12 or A14 iPPC-3000, which are very powerful, too. The F12 has 7,63 mm H₂O and 186,7 m³/h at 43,5 dB(A), and the A14 has  6,58 mm H₂O and 269,3 m³/h at 41,3 dB(A), so you'd want to run them at less than 100%.
  6. Or use those fans on the Assassin IV.
  7. For a high-CFM but lower noise exhaust fan, maybe go with the (at lower speeds):
Got space for a 180mm? Get the Silverstone Air Penetrator SST-AP182! At 6.1 mmAq and 167.2 CFM at 40 dBA, with a slot cover speed dial, that'll keep things cool!
Not interested? How about the ear-splitting Delta 12038 (PFC1212DE-6A50), a fan so strong that my fan controller cut out before it did?! In fact, it's the only fan I tested so far that does that! It's got better specs at 35.86 mmAq and 253 CFM at 66.5 dBA! 🤯

Oh, you're hard to please, aren't you? Try the bgears or the Asus I mentioned above! Both are quieter than 30 dBA.
Honestly, though, there are many other choices but I don't feel like sorting through my 300 fans to find the other high-CFM fans that aren't noisy. Eventually, I'll get my database up to snuff and make it publicly viewable. The problem is that some of my fans are so old that the specs don't exist online! Very annoying!
  8. Have you considered getting a great rad with tubes and pump and mounting that, then adding quiet but powerful fans? You'll quite possibly spend LESS than buying one of the top-performing AIOs, especially if you choose wisely on the pump and rad combo.

I can't give you a full list, but here are the 24 really super fans. Keep in mind that several have speed adjuster switches, but only the Silverstone has a dial. Also note that some of these are expensive and/or discontinued. Please don't stick your fingers in the strongest ones, as tempting as it may be! Stats are only for the maximum speed setting (of the maximum possible for switched fans).

Its a 7800x3D, you can cool it with a straw and blowing on it. Don't overthink this.

Any popular dual tower, any fans and some manual curve tuning and it'll be quiet and cool.

Why not? He doesn't want the RAM covered and it's designed not to overhang the RAM. Unless, of course, his mobo's VRM on the left are in the way of the lefthand fan...

I have tried to intake from the rear before, and all it does it kick dust onto all of your components. As noted, it is a 78X3D.. fairly easy to cool..

I didn't say intake from the rear, did I? I'm talking about having the fans pointed towards the rear and the heatsink attached so that the notch where I wrote "RAM" is over the RAM, so they're visible as Matt wants.

You left it open for interpretation so..

Fans are more effective in a push, or push/pull configuration compared to a pull configuration.

Does it come pre-assembled? I meant for it to be as one would expect it to be, not contrary to the standard direction of flow, otherwise I would've said to have it blow to the right/front. 😛

I agree, it's best to have them push, second best is push/pull, and pull only is a distant third unless the unit is sealed to prevent the leakage that makes pull weak.

Only a single fan on dual towers works good and even better in shorter length cases. It's what I do with my dual towers and save the extra fan for something else.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3950X   Motherboard: MSI X570 Gaming Edge Wifi   Case: Deepcool Maxtrexx 70   GPU: RTX 3090   RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3x16GB 3200 MHz   PSU: Super Flower 850W

I'm going to add this. I tested Corsair SP120 RGB Elite and ML120, and the Noctua fans, single and dual fans on my U12A, and double always produced better results. That said, a single T30 does better than both A12x25s. Yes, I know you said dual tower.

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂
