Dell U2414H

Go to solution Solved by Karumu,

Thanks.

Just out of interest, how can it be both?

I was under the impression that the panel either used TFT or IPS technology.

Obviously, I don't have a great understandign of monitor technology!

Anyone care to elaborate?

Monitors have panel types and the technology it uses to display images to the panel (correct me if i'm wrong) in this case it would be an IPS panel on a TFT display

So I'm looking at buying this monitor.
On the amazon page, and everywhere else I've read (reviews etc.), it says the display uses an IPS panel.
However, on the product user guide, page 6, it says the display is TFT.

So A) Which is it? (I'm fairly certain it's IPS but wanna check first)
and B ) Do you think this is a good monitor to buy at this price point?

I couldn't get it to link properly, kept missing off the end, so copy & paste this address into your browser.

ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_display_projector/esuprt_Display/dell-u2414h_User's%20Guide_en-us.pdf

Thanks in advance
Rhys

IPS is just the panel type, just like TN or PLS. TFT means the type of monitor TFT stands for thin film transistor, just like LCD, which is liquid crystal display, and CRT which is cathode ray tube.

Karumu, your explanation has made it clearer, but I still don't really understand.

I recently wrote about this monitor in another post. I recommend reading that post: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/152593-best-ips-monitor-for-gaming/?p=2048177

Short answer: Good monitor, but it does have some problems with HDMI and DP on Nvidia GPU's. Again these issues have been mentioned in the post i linked above.

A TFT backplane is a grid of transistors that sits behind the panel.  It is what controls the liquid crystals in the panel, whether that is an IPS or TN panel.  Or even OLED.

Thanks guys, extremely helpful as aways :)

I think I was getting confused between TN and TFT.

I think I'll buy the monitor when I get paid :)
