Budget (including currency): Unsure but let's go with $500 max for now.

*edit: above was for the mobo.... budget for system is about $2500usd

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming mostly as my older pc will be maintained for my daily routine stuff.

Other details: Fun part, I need 3 choices to for a Motherboard. 1.) Needs to be a generation old, do not need the newest gen. 2.) needs to be able to hold 2 gpus. (I know but I have 960 doing nothing and it needs to go somewhere to be useful so its going to be doing F@H year-round so need a slot for it) 3.) lastly the CPU is going to be and intel but I have not decided on the chip yet. Will be last gen (not current gen).

Hopefully I get some good suggestions with this. let me know you if want more information.

What I have chosen so far.

Case: bequiet Dark Base 900 or 901

Mobo: ??

CPU: Intel ?

RAM: Crucial 16-32gb

PSU: 1200w -1600w (still deciding on brand)

GPU: Asus TUFF 3090 or 3090TI (this may change if 40xx prices start to drop 🙄 )

I have all peripherals I need already.

Yes, either will work. Im not a newest is best guy. Just I want what works and haven't kept up with last few gen stuff so I am ignorant atm.

I have not chosen this but likely it will be Crucial Ram ... 16-32Gb (should have added that.)

I like the high core count with the hyper-thread. This will be handy.

what resolution are you playing at? If it's 4k or 1440p you could even go down to a 12600k to save some money

1440. I have 3 monitors on a stand but when I am playing heavy renders like Star Citizen I turn off 2 of the screens to save the 1080 (non Ti) I have. Lol. You can see my current build in my signature, its still keeping up but barely. 😉

It looks quite decent to me. Your 1080 is just slightly worse than my 3060

not re-using the same case, getting a new one, see op. atx is good, I like that mobo. did a compare with the Asus and MSI equivalents and this one meets my need better I believe.

Based on @filpo's suggestion, here is what I am thinking, not too worried about the storage atm just need boot drive, I may populate the other m.2's instead of getting ssd's but that is for later decision.

TBH I'm not a Thermaltake guy, I do like the suggestion, but I admit I will have to fight my preconception of past years of the "thermal-fake" to consider this.

They have a CL17 version but it has no heat spreader and has a slower pc speed. Here is the comparison...

DDR4-2400 • CL=17 • Non-ECC • UDIMM • 288-pin • 1.2V • 2Rx8 • PC4-19200

DDR4-3200 • CL=22 • Non-ECC • UDIMM • 288-pins • 1.2V • 2Rx8 • PC4-25600

I think the trade off is ok.

You want a 3090 for the vram right? (as well as some of the gaming performance)

afaik some 3090s should be 550 used. That might’ve changed but I can’t check rn (in the car). I’ll look for some as soon as I get back in the afternoon

Not really just don't want to spend the money on a 40xx. Then again when they announce the 50xx price might drop. 🤷

I have no issues EVGA, I will look into this one. Evga, beQuiet and SeaSonic, Corsair are in my top5. Chose the beQuiet to match the case. Lol

Updated my op to include total build budget to $2500 including gpu. Dumb that gpu's cost more than the rig it goes in these days. Insane.

true but probably not by far. 2080 ti's are still around the price of a used 6800 and for gaming, the 6800 is just slightly better and it has more vram (and it's newer) so it will drop, but not by a huge amount

how much are you paying for that gpu? If it's anything more than $600 I say don't do it. And if your budget's that high then even a 4090 could fit. Tho it's not very good value at it's current price of $2000 image.thumb.png.5c185625615f319d00774d8a4ed6b290.png

You could probs slot in a 4080 (for about $1100) and that'd be better and more power efficient than that 3090

But if you don't wanna spend that much on a gpu then fair enough. The 7900 xtx is also an option at $900, don't know how good it is at BOiNC tho

But if you don't wanna spend that much on a gpu then fair enough. The 7900 xtx is also an option at $900, don't know how good it is at BOiNC tho

As little as possible, but I'm giving myself wriggle room. Definitely not paying 2k for a card haha. If I can keep the card to around 1k I'll be ok with the card. At this point it's all a good jump from my current card. And as sweet it would be to have a 4090 those were never a good buy, just bragging rights.

I'll take a look at the 4080 and 7900xtx.

The gpu will be bought last though so this isn't an immediate decision.  My more important thing was getting the main parts decided on like the mobo an cpu out of the way and you've helped me with that.

Much appreciated.
