First home NAS?

Budget (including currency): aud, but not sure how much I should be spending

Country: Australia

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: storage of work and personal files, potential server?

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): don't really have any ideas, a good amount of storage slots

Edit: Or would it be better to just buy a prebuilt nas?

Hi buddy,

 

Purchasing something pre-build from the likes of WD, Qnap or Synology is perfectly ok but would will tend to pay a premium as its an out-of-the-box solution and already setup for you (pretty much).

 

Going down the DIY front is always more fun and does allow you and your NAS to grow at tour own rate.

 

If you are just looking for something store your files and be accessible 24/7 at a transfer rate that is likely to be a tad quicker than your internet.

 

I started with a Fractal Node 804 and its grown a few arms and legs from there.

 

Now its got 8 Hard disks and Unraid and it does all my file serving, runs a Ubuntu VM when I decide to tinker with that and it has a few docker containers running PLEX, Pi-Hole and NZBget.
