Hi all!

So I thought I had a pretty decent PC until I bought Ark Survival Ascended. Turns out I may as be playing on a GameBoy. I've been told that while my PC as a whole needs updating, replacing the graphics card should be the priority. I've also been recommended the Sapphire RX 7800 XT, but I thought I'd check in with you nice boffins to see A) Whether that will work with my PC setup and B) Whether there's a better, preferably cheaper alternative to the 7800. Money is tight so if there's very little difference between two models, I'll always go for the cheaper one. But I also understand that this is a long term investment and I don't want to be upgrading again any time soon after this. Here is my current setup:

GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 580

CPU: Ryzen 5 2600

RAM: 16GB (I know this has to be upgraded too, after the GPU)

Motherboard: B450 Tomahawk Max

PSU: Corsair CX500M ATX

1.5TB SSD (Two units)

Many thanks in advance!

this doesn't

this does. I'd get a 5600 and then a new 6700 xt, if your budget's somewhere around $500

Maybe even a 5700x

If you have around $600 get a 5600 CPU and a 7700XT

And what's your RAM speed? 16GB is ok if it's not 2133...

Generally agree with previous comments, GPU and CPU would be top two priorities. It is easy to go faster in both, but specifics depend mainly on budget. Ram can be left alone for now.

I didn't know what that meant but I've just looked it up and mine does say 2133... Is that really bad?

It will reduce performance, although there are some settings that could be adjusted to help.

It would help if you have CPU-Z, post a screenshot of the memory and SPD tabs (with a slot in use selected) so we can see what you're running, and what it could do.

Here you go, thanks. Slots 2 and 4 are the same.

Ok it's 3000MHz RAM, not that bad, just go to BIOS and enable XMP

It was an option on the top left of the bios homescreen. I've just Googled it and apparently the extra performance is not worth the strain it puts on your CPU.

So back to before, you think the 6700-XT is the best fit for me? After that I'll upgrade the CPU to 5600 as per yours and the other poster's kind suggestions. Then RAM down the line. All this is fine with my current motherboard and PSU?

For the  mobo you'll need to update it

Your PSU is pretty meh but should hold with the new parts that  aren't really power hungry (80W CPU + 230W GPU)

Eesh, a new motherboard too. Any suggestions? Nothing fancy, just something that'll do the job.

No no I meant update the BIOS, not "upgrade  the mobo" 😄

Oh phew! Ok cool I'll get to work on updating the bios now, then start shopping for those parts! You've been most helpful my friend, I really appreciate it.
