Sorry, but you need to at least specify the type of games you're playing or even better the game's title

And/or Ray Tracing is a must have or ignored for your preference

Based on GN's testing last month, RX 7800 XT is slightly better than RX 6800 XT, and with £30 price difference, I think it's a nice choice to go for 7800

I would imagine that with future driver update, 7800 will be better optimized

But comparing RX 7800 XT to 4070, RX 7800 XT is better in overall gaming test (ignoring RT factor obviously)

image.thumb.png.0bbd56dd0943040940ffeb6f82fe86ee.png

The chart is flipped favouring RTX 4070 if your gaming preference is Ray Tracing

I share GN's YT video for reference as well if you're interesting in checking in depth

All in all, IMO either RX 6800, RX 7800 or even RTX 4070 is a good GPU

It's up to your specific usage to fit in the best GPU

Budget (including currency): whatever the price is for them really

Country: England

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): 144Hz at 1440p

I’m upgrading from my old 2060 super to a newer 6/7800XT but can’t choose. The 7800XT is ever so slightly faster, essentially within the margin of error, but costs slightly more. Would it be worth it to spend the extra £30 or so to upgrade from the 6800XT to 7800XT for newer tech despite them being just as powerful as one another?

IMO it's not worth it. You'll get the similar raster performance and still have to use FSR. If you're going to spend more than a used 6800XT and for a new card, then the 4070 makes a lot more sense to me mainly just because of DLSS, better RT, and better power management.

Idk, the 4070 seems like you’re paying for DLSS and better RT, which I wouldn’t use RT anyways, and FSR is probably good enough as I only really play racing games. I was thinking the 6800XT as that’s probably better for the price when getting it new but if the price is right on sale I’ll definitely get the 7800XT or 4070 instead. Thanks!

As far as games go I usually play BeamNG, Assetto Corsa with a ton graphics mods, and would like the headroom for a new title like Alan Wake 2 or Forza Motorsport 8. Never have used RT and never will.

I was certainly considering the 7800XT for the newer hardware and faster AI stuff for FSR and AM FMF. I think in the end it all comes down to pricing though. If the 6800XT or 7800XT are at completely different price points by the time black friday rolls around then it’ll be a different story. But for now I’m definitely eyeing up the 7800XT. Thanks man!

Alan Wake 2

Nice, I'm looking forward for that game as well, but I'm waiting for Christmas sale because Epic games (as current Alan Wake 2 sole distributor) tends to have additional voucher 10-20% every June and December

Well, IMO the AI stuff in current Radeon line up is 'better than nothing at all', unlike NVIDIA that has huge AI improvement on 4000 line up compared to 3000 series, at the cost of raw power performance sadly.

But still, I enjoy 'traditional' rendering, at least until RT technology in hardware and software has matured

Probably very subjective but I don't consider FSR good enough or useful compared to the new DLSS. I would always rather keep FSR off if it's the only available option because it has too many issues specially visible on my OLED screen. The new DLSS on the other hand even has a 4K performance mode that is more Temporaly stable than FSR quality mode, and legitimately looks better than native TAA in quality mode or even balanced at times . And with things like DLDSR+DLSS it's a clear winner for 1080p/1440p and a deal maker for me, The recent comparisons in Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk PL, AC Mirage, Robocop speak for themselves. To me it's the difference between having and not having an upscaler. But again, very subjective stuff and good luck with whichever card you pick.
