So me and the wife have the same problem and a short google search shows its a fairly common problem with no clear solution but any form of screen capture in windows is basically broken and you just get this massively blow out picture its awful see example below hit print screen and u get this... turn HDR off and it fixes it try, screen sharing in discord the same problem. How can this be a problem for so long theirs posts about it going back at least year if not longer.

My question is how can things like this be broken for so long? its not like its some higher level function that is very rarely used. Just blows my mind

Never been a problem for me, run HDR 24/7. My OBS is configured to record in HDR.

Well yeah OBS works, the point is Windows itself doesn't tone-map down to SDR for applications (and native screenshotting) that do not have native HDR support.

Its extremely frustrating as I only occasionally like to do a screenshot and simply can't any more as I always use AutoHDR even if games do not have native support.

Oh, for screenshots.. yeah I might have jumped the gun.

In games I use GameBar as it saves both an HDR .jxr image and a tonemapped .png. The PNG's aren't great... too dark, but they're usable.

At the desktop though, yeah there is no good option. If I really need to, I just use the key combo to disable HDR briefly.
