4 cores enough?

Go to solution Solved by Levent,

Its more than enough, I did a lot more with a lot less.

Howdy! I'm looking to setup a minecraft/vpn server on proxmox which will be running on a 4 core i5 either 3rd gen or 4th gen I can't remember. But i'm curious if that will be enough cpu for running the vpn with up to 4 conncurent clients and the minecraft server with two clients all at the same time? the ram is 8gbs and I plan to allocate 2gbs to the VPN and 4 to the minecraft server.

Pretty sure that would be fine for vpns, but not so sure about minecraft server, this is a pretty old cpu, so I think it would be pretty laggy if there's more than like 2 players, or even with 2 only

Why do you insist on using these old CPU ? An i3 12100 will perform better

It's not that I insist it's just that it's what I have to work with atm. I have one other option that I know would work because I've done it before but I hoped to consolidate the servers to leave maximum room in my main home lab. If it's not gonna work it's not the end of the world tho

I'm also not interested in purchasing new hardware for it if I'm going to make it dedicated. Like, I know what would work but I was hoping to get away with this if possible.

Have known folks who ran a basic server with a couple mods on a raspberry pi, stuff on the ground would disappear after a bit due to the low RAM, but it had no issues with a few clients. A haswell i5 should easily handle it.

^ I use 2200Gs at work for various VMs (mostly our Snipe-IT instance - inventory database basically) and some other stuff, those are similar to haswell chips on performance, and also 4c/4t.

Oh, good to hear that, if that's the case than my 8700 should be more than enough for a server, when I finnaly get a new pc
