So I currently have a ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 2080 AMP Extreme https://www.zotac.com/us/product/graphics_card/zotac-gaming-geforce-rtx-2080-amp-extreme in my computer that I purchased new when it came out. It has served me well so far. I am in the process of buying a computer I built for a friend back from him. In that computer, we put an ASUS Dual GeForce RTX™ 3070 V2 OC Edition LHR https://www.asus.com/us/motherboards-components/graphics-cards/dual/dual-rtx3070-o8g-v2/

I have a 2-part question. First off, which one should I use in my gaming rig? While I'm switching my computer around, would it be wise to repaste and replace thermal pads in my 2080? Running Heaven Benchmark it stays around 75-78 at 1440 ultra rendering.

Any guidance or insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

The rest of the system is

i5 13600k

Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280 A-RGB

asus rog strix z690-a ddr4

32 gb ddr4 ram

1000w seasonic platinum

along with a couple m.2

Thanks

I'd go with 3070, it's simply faster and newer.

Repasting is not really necessary if the temps are still pretty decent, but couldn't hurt. Just make sure that if it uses thermal pads, you don't damage or lose the old ones (if still reusable), and could find replacement thermal pads of the same thickness.

Occassionaly visits the forum when I have nothing to do at work.

Thank you for your input, that was what I was thinking but wanted another opinion.

While I'd use the 3070, if you're not keeping both PCs for use (or if the second PC is going to be used as a server and has an iGPU) I'd consider selling both GPUs and buying a 4070, 7800XT or 4070Ti (if you can afford) instead. The extra vRAM will be helpful and access to frame gen and av1 encoding on the Nvidia cards will go a long way. The AMD card is just great rasterization for its cost, though since I only recommend Sapphire for AMD cards, it makes cheaper 4070 cards like MSI's 2X OC Ventus cheaper in the USA, so your mileage may vary.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

I usually just go by the passmark video benchmarks charts https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

On their charts, the 2080 scores 18,808 and the 3070 scores 22,481. I'd look into what was said above and see if selling both cards could get you an even better one. As for repasting, I'd only ever bother if there is an issue.

Don't use passmark it's a skewed program that doesn't reflect on actual GPU ability.

Techpowerup heirarchy is more reflective since its based on a game data set with the average based on the games tested.

I also second the idea of ignoring Passmark, since they aggregate EVERYONE who runs the benches. This means the overall score can include people who dunno what they're doing bringing down an average. The more popular a card the higher the likelihood of this happening too.
