Oh Gosh, what Graphics Card to Buy in Oct 2023?

Hey, I want to upgrade my GPU from a 2070s to... well, something more powerful.

Budget (including currency): 500-1000€

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming, Video Editing / Rendering

Other details, existing system:

  • I will keep my i9-9900k, the rest will be adjusted around the GPU (unless it's totally reasonable...)
  • Monitor native res: 1440

My research so far was disappointing since I couldn't find the clear recommendation I was hoping for. I would be glad to just go for a 4070  / 4070 Ti (highest number within budget -> let's go!), but I found out reviews on the Ti were mixed and quite controversial.

  • The 4070 might already be a solid upgrade, but are there any other features or tech that would make the Ti more desirable other than 15-25% more fps?
  • I might also consider the upper end of the 30 series

Any opinions on how to spend my money to get reasonable value?

Thanks!

What's your monitor resolution? Unless it's 4k the 4070 ti will be too much for the 9900k. The 4070 should be fine but what you could do is get a 7600 + b650 and ddr5 system and then get a 4070 if you're playing at 1080p

Look at upgrading that 9900K too, as even at 1440p it will have trouble keeping up and will hold back the GPU a bit.

Honestly, that is a solid system you have.  I'd keep it together and buy a new machine, maybe sell that one to subsidize the cost.

Personally, at 1440p, I went from a 5820k-1080ti to a 5820k-4070 and it was incredible, irregardless of the fact that the 5820k is holding it back

BF2042 went from 70fps to around ~130

Cod (multiplayer, not warzone, although that went up too) went from 90 to 120-130

I saw massive jumps in almost all my games, and the single player games especially.

I suspect your i9 9900k will be just fine with a 4070, and your gaming performance will be excellent.

The only comment I would have is that if playing catch up every few years isnt to your liking (upgrade gpu, then cpu falls behind, upgrade cpu then gpu falls behind), then you might just have to take an L here eith the 4070 and save up, or dont buy anything rn and save up

Shipping sucks

While your increase was great, it should have been double that.  90 fps to over 150.  So if you want to spend $600 and get half your increase  now and get the other half later, rock it.

400 off of marketplace, which is very different from the (400 + a modest budget of 300) 700$ youd spend to get a mobo+cpu+gpu that satisfies your desire for optimal efficiency

If we all had $$ laying around, nobody would be asking which part to upgrade!!

Right, so get a 7800XT now, and then with holiday sales get the rest.

If you're already willing to spend 1000 Euro on a GPU alone, you're in the big leagues.  You're NOT poor if you can buy 1000E cards.

I do very well and have yet to spend 1000 on a GPU, so yeah...  I can talk maximum efficiency.

Thanks for sharing, I guess this is what it comes down to in the end - and if this achievement is within my budget, I'd be fine with it.

That really got me thinking and I'll do some research, maybe I can find numbers.

However, buying a whole new system is out of the question, CPU and mother board are around 3yrs old and I don't find it reasonable to step up here, I'm still satisfied. 🙂 The 2070 isn't bad either, but - and that's my personal take - I'd like to upgrade here. I'll check if it's worth the money considering the other components!

Well, I'd be more than happy to stay under 700€ or even 600€. But since my system would bottleneck a top tier GPU, I'd be glad to save some money. 🙂

Not sure if something around the 3080 would be a good match - barely available and a high price tag.

Actually, I found out the 3070 Ti is around 500€, which looks not too bad.

Any opinions on that, would that work better with my CPU?

7800xt for 500 outperforms the 3070Ti.  Or are you 100% going Nvidia?
