Other details:

I got an omen pc a few years ago and wanting to start upgrading parts of it slowly, already upgrade my ram from 16gb to 32gb

I have a nvidia geforce gtx 1660 super, and an intel i5-9400 currently, motherboard is HP 84FD 00. What are some good choices to upgrade to, don’t need to newest stuff though?

There aren't any holdbacks that I am trying to fix, my pc runs fine and runs most games good enough. Just wanting to start upgrading my pc so that it can look better while running good, I have a 144hz monitor.

The motherboard looks like it might be a standard model, so it is possible you can upgrade the PSU, but what PSU does it have now and what dimensions are you limited by for the graphics card (particularly the length)?

What is the case cooling like?

Do you know what CPUs the Omen range came with and if you can fit a standard cooler?

It might be best to choose a CPU that it already supported, as the BIOS on OEM PCs can be pretty locked down and the VRM doesn't have a heatsink. HP's spec page (for the board) says it can support any 65 watt CPU, including the 9900, but these are rather ridiculous used prices and have pretty high power consumption, so a 8700 or 9700 may be a better buy.

What resolution?

The highest upgrade I'd be looking at would be something like an i7-9700, with a 4070. But, realistically, I suspect an i7-8700, with a 6700 XT would be a better priced upgrade and the next one would lead to you replacing everything.

That generation of CPUs is too old for any modern GPU. If i was you, i would go 9700k + 2nd hand 1080(Ti). No point of pouring money into a GPU, unless you plan a complete platform change. Maybe, jsut maybe, if you can find it for a good price an RX7600. It's basically a 1080Ti:

| Ryzen 7 5800X3D | Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 Rev 7| AsRock X570 Steel Legend |

| 4x16GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo 4000MHz CL16 | Sapphire Nitro+ RX 6900 XT | Seasonic Focus GX-1000|

| 512GB A-Data XPG Spectrix S40G RGB | 2TB A-Data SX8200 Pro| Phanteks Eclipse G500A |

all at 100$ range and barely an upgrade thanks to the choked cache size. At that point OP might as well consider a platform swap as used Ryzen's are at that price points.

I personally would keep this system running till its down to the ground. Or get a used 1080Ti if it is a 550W PSU.
