Normal To Hear HDD Spin?

okkee
Go to solution Solved by Needfuldoer,

Completely normal. To save power, your computer will spin the drive down when it's not in use, then spin it back up when it's needed again.

If that hard drive was your boot drive before, it probably never spun down because it was always needed so you never noticed it make a different sound.

Double check its health with a SMART tool like CrystalDiskInfo if you want some peace of mind, but I bet it's still healthy.

Recently got a ssd. So i cloned the HDD and am now using it for my games, media etc. Every now and then though, i can hear this sort of wind up noise. The drive performs ok and i don't have any issues but i would like to know if there's something wrong with it.
