That is what I figured. I generally have a decent idea of what to do and how to do it. But I'm certainly still a novice. I say FileCloud because it's an actual service and I'm not just referencing any type of NAS software. My plan is to run ubuntu and run the VPN and FileCloud in docker containers. If an i7 4790 is more than enough though I'm definitely going that route since it's just easier and cheaper to maintain. I just didn't want to run the risk of not having enough power for it. Thank you for the help!

My apologies i was ignorant to FileCloud be an exsisting thing. 😄
But yeah all should run very light and that 4790 should be more then enough. (im guessing, still not know FileCloud 😉 )

I'm looking to get max storage however so I need extra drive bays... might just use an external drive though

You can get pretty large drives already, might be worth it since less drives less power usage. 😉
(And yes my NAS is using to much power with 7x4TB drives in it, and also weighs a bleeping tonne. (so yeah thats 220W+ constantly on idle)
(i would adve NOT to go external, you would just introduce another point of failure. (The SATA to USB controller in this case).

I'm currently looking to get a home server setup for running two things and two things only. A File cloud server and a vpn that will only be used by devices I allow. I currently have a PC I'm not using with an i5 12600k. I know for a fact that it could easily run both of those. However, it also feels excessive. I have a friend with an older PC, and it uses an i7 4790. I thought I might see about trading computers so they can have the benefit when gaming and I can have just what I need no more no less. Would an i7 4790 be a bad idea and if so, why? Just btw, there will only be a max of four users on the VPN and the data server will only be accessed on occasion. If you need more info let me know and thank you for your help!

In addition to the i7 4790 it will be 16Gbs of RAM and an SSD for running the server's OS

a mini pc (lenovo/HP or any another brand) with a decent i5 should work and it will draw less power than desktops (with a lower idle draw aswell). (along as its a mobile CPU)

Not sure if power cost is a factor, but older hardware is generally less effecient so it will do less per Watt. Keep that in mind.

To run a NAS (what file cloud storage is) you dont need that much CPU power.
You will need a way to make it accesible to the internet tho. (also not CPU heavy, but might be a lot of work).

And VPN is also very light work. (Just letting people access your local network over the internet.)

This all could technically be done on a mediocre router, dont even need a PC...

FileCloud ain't cheap, if you can afford it you can afford a proper modern server, no?

Unless there is a cheaper plan i am not seeing?

If I'm not mistaken there is an option, I found through Network Chuck that's free. It just doesn't have a lot of the features since it's a non commercial license type of deal.
