Bad idea?

Totally-A-Hero

So i was gonna go with a 290 windforce cus of the cheap price but decided a $400 GPU wasnt in my $1000 budget. So then i settled on a 280x,but decided that if i wasnt getting the 290 i might aswell go back to the 7950 and upgrade when the new cards come out. Then i may have made a bad decision.I thought, why spend $250 on gpu when i just wanna upgrade to something top of the line when the new cards come out? so i bought a 7870 ghz edition for 150 bucks. This may pay off leaving me with lots of headroom to upgrade with the leftover money i have or piss me off when i get this card and wanna break it. Was this a terrible decision?

@Totally-A-Hero Reading that was similar to having a fever dream, so much information in such little time.  Anyway, provided you sell your old gpu when you have enough to upgrade to high end, it doesn't really seem like a dumb decision.  When I built my computer, I had to wait 2 months before I could order my gtx 760, and was using just Integrated Graphics for a while.  It was painful, but absolutely worth it.

Acctually i may keep this GPU when i upgrade, the most they really go for is like 100-120 dollars maybe less so i guess having a spare is always nice or i can throw this in a WoW rig for my mom.

Depends on your definition of a bad idea. I might have just sucked it up and saved up to get the 290 in the budget.

I'm thoroughly happy with my 7870 and I play on 2560x1440 so as far as buying a shitty card I wouldn't be concerned.

Or just buy a 2nd 7870 later on for a Crossfire setup and have near 290/x performance for a slight upgrade cost vs paying for a large one and having the 7870 go to waste.

both are GCN - which means mantel capable and both do DX11 and are DX12 capable.

so long as the game responds well to crossfire it would work out fairly well.

but its up to you.

I just bought a used 7870 for crossfire with mine for 140. (Still $300 here for a 7870)

I find its the better way to get bang for buck. But you may have to troubleshoot over running a single card

Thanks Guys! Fullmetal

I would have gone with a 7950 instead, not much more expensive than a 7870 and significantly faster.

Almost $100 more all of these prices are tax included.

Plenty of 7950s on ebay for under $150. I've actually been looking at GPU prices for the past couple of days and I've just ordered a Gigabyte R9 290 Windforce for $309.

Im definatley not buying used.....Why take the gamble?

There is no gamble, you have buyers protection which means you can return the product for a full refund within 14 days.

Plus I've found reference R9 290s selling for $200 just two days ago, 63 were sold in under 4 hours.

I do agree with you buying it used or on clearance warranty (my place got this clearance warranty for like 14 days or so warranty) no return yada yada.

buying used is never a good option unless you really have no choice.

I remember i bought a used 8800gt back then which broke in 2 months.
