Well, you'll have to decide whether you want to go down the Nikon, Canon, or Sony path.

All the three major brands are a little different, but they all make great DSLRs.

I find that a big reason for choosing any brand is this; what do your friends shoot?

And this may seem like a bad reason, but it's not really. I'm quiet happy because my friends all shoot Nikon (as do I) so we can borrow each others lenses and such.

I'll leave you to ponder on this abit.

15" MBP TB

AMD 5800X | Gigabyte Aorus Master | EVGA 2060 KO Ultra | Define 7 || Blade Server: Intel 3570k | GD65 | Corsair C70 | 13TB

Since you need long battery life, I suggest you choose a DSLR with a battery grip, which allows for 2 batteries to be placed simultaneously. I know for sure the both Canon and Nikon DSLRs have battery grips. For your first camera I personally would suggest a Canon Rebel t4i or Canon 60D.

no I don't have any yet, but I just order a T4i just test it if I like it or not.

T4i is great, I'm glad you are planning on trying it out.

On a side note, stepping into Sony DSLR territory is you either like it or you don't. You also are very limited in ' accessorie' support.

What ever route you go be it Canon or Nikon theres a great second hand market out there, The Nikon d7000 is a very nice camera and can be got at great prices remember to put cash aside for lens. I probable avoid full frame for now simple because of budget but if you can pick up a d700 for a nice price go for it but thats a different beast altogether.

I really like my Canon T4i. What I find is with Nikons, their lenses are great and their hardware is great, but all of their cameras are severely hampered by the software they choose to use. Canon has good lenses, good hardware, and good software — much more well rounded. Plus I've learned on a Canon so I will never go back. They are fantastic cameras for the money. If you want to save a bit more you could even get a Canon T2i. The sensor itself hasn't really changed much.
