Building a high end system

Go to solution Solved by Dedayog,

That motherboard is an overspend and dead waste of money for a dead end platform.

I'd go with a 7950x3d personally.   Easier to undervolt and tame, as that DR Pro 4 won't even dent that 13900k.

PSU - overkill on power, I'd grab a 1000w platinum from SuperFlower or the like.

Not sure if the 7900XTX is helpful for AI, may need to move to Nvidia.

Following the guild here, doing a new build for the first time in 7-8 years, so would like som feedback - Thanks 😄

1. Budget & Location
No real limit on the budget, paying by doing consultant work, so paying by hours, and i am buying alot of other hardware, so the direct value is not that important to me, i want a system that i can use for many years for my type of work loads.
I am in the EU.

2. Aim
I am a programmer and security tester on the application side. I do a lot of virtualization and home lap stuff with both VMs (VirtualBox) and Docker / WSL. An would like to look into simple AI modeling (Complet noob atm. in AI traning). Other then that i would like to play Harry Potter Legacy, Baldur's Gate 3 and game like that coming out in the coming years. I just played Dragon Age Inquisition Full clear, thats the most my old computer could run, and loved it even on relativ low settings.
I want a quite system that i can work next to.
And i don't want any RGB or other flashy things. (Hard case so don't care, but wan't to pay for it)

3. Monitors
I have a 60Hz 1440p 49" super ultrawide LG. and i an plaing to upgrade to a Samsung Odyssey G7 S32BG700EU 32" 4K with the build. And have quite a few old 1080p that i use as VM monitors.

4. Peripherals
Buying Logitech Master Series MX Mechanical and Logitech Master Series MX MASTER 3S.
For Sound a pair of Jabra Evolve2 85 UC.

5. Why are you upgrading?
I can and have a job that can be paid with consultant work. And my old 4th Gen Intel is getting old with the rest of my current system.

So my build at the moment:

1x Intel CPU Core i9 I9-13900K 3GHz 24-core
1x Dark Rock PRO 4
1x Arctic MX-6 Thermal Paste - 4g
1x ASRock Z790 Taichi Extended ATX
1x Fractal Design Define Series R6
6x be quiet! Silent Wings Pro 4 Fan 140 mm
2x G.Skill Ripjaws S5 DDR5 64GB kit 6000MHz
1x ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB OC
1x be quiet! Dark Power PRO 12 1200W
2x Samsung 990 PRO Solid state MZ-V9P2T0BW 2TB
1x LG BH16NS40 Super Multi Blue - I know, but i still use CDs, i am old...

Any thing that i sould consider changing, or that is just a complet waste in the system?

Keep in mind that you likely won't be able to run those at 5000MHz+ with that i9. You may even be lucky if you can manage 4400~4600MHz, some people only managed to get 3600MHz on DDR5 on Intel (so DDR4 speeds with worse latencies.

If you want to go for 128gb on DDR5, AMD seems to be a better option at this moment. It's even easier if you go for 192GB instead. You can also opt to go with DDR4 instead, should be more doable at 3200~3600MHz.

Or you can downgrade to only 2 sticks, with either 64 or 96gb.

Be aware that this will be pretty much useless for machine learning, you'd be better off with a nvidia GPU if you really want to dip your toes into that.

If you like to tinker around, you may be able to get ROCm working on linux, but I personally would avoid that headache.

for a CPU cooler, you really want a very powerful cooler for 13th gen i9, that CPU gets hotter than Sahara desert in the middle of the day

@Dedayog what's a good cooler for the 7950x3D?

Thanks for the feedback  @Dedayog😄

I like the Networking setup of the Motherboard - The ability to run wire and Wi-Fi in dual mode, with an extra 1Gb for direct external lab stuff - Don't know i i can get that on a lower motherboard?

To cool the 13900k what would i need as an upgrade? I like to play with overclocking a bit, just for fun 😄

I will look into the AI side more on the GPU.

Good info, then if there is a specific feature set it has then go for it.  Lots here just see more expensive as better, so good to see you thought it out.  Not sure about  that feature on a cheaper board, someone else may know.

Straight up I would go with the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360mm.  Arguably the best 360mm AIO for a decent price.

Yup, I believe you would have no issues using XMP with only 2 sticks. 4 sticks is a bit problematic for intel's current consumer lineup (and also was to AMD until a recent bios update).

I think with a 360mm AIO and a good case airflow, you can.  I don't count stress-testing as that purposefully tries to thermal throttle to max 100% load.  If you pack fans into the R6 it does well.   I run mine with 2x140 front intake, 1x140 bottom intake, 360mm AIO top exhaust and 1x120 back exhaust.

Yes, the DDR5 controllers tend to work better with 2 sticks.  The controllers haven't matured to the DDR4 stability yet.

Great - Can i put it in the front without any problem? Would like to keep the top plate on. (If i leave the plate on, dose it make any sens to put a 140mm fan as exuast there?)

The just changeing 3 of my 140mm fans to the ones on the AIO.

Think that will be better, may be a bit louder, but can't tell for sure.

Yes, I would put a couple 120's or 140's up top for exhaust, it's a case built for that with the dual top plates.

The AIO will have 120mm fans, so leave them.  Yes, put in front if you want.
