HDR problem

smoothnobody

i've been having some issues with HDR and can't figure out what the problem is. using madVR + potplayer + windows 11 + QN90A. i've always had HDR in windows display settings turned off. when i played a HDR movie my display would "switch" to HDR mode. i could always tell when this happens cause the display would turn black for a second. another way i could tell was by pressing control J in potplayer. it would say NV HDR. lately movies have been looking dull and washed out. i noticed it's not switching to HDR cause the screen doesn't go black when i start a movie. so i went in to windows display settings and turned on HDR manually. it does look better but still doesn't seem right. when i control J it doesn't say NV HDR, it says OS HDR. i've never seen this before and i'm assuming this is basically fake HDR similar to auto HDR for SDR content. since the screen isn't going black when the movie starts i'm pretty sure something isn't right but can't figure out what.

I would try some HDR video on Youtube. If those correctly then your player is the problem.

Q90A always have its local dimming on, you generally don't need to set anything on TV to get the HDR output.

Not sure when this happened, but I am also using MadVR + MPC-HC for HDR movies and for a long time I did not have to enable HDR manually either but idk, half a year ago, that changed. So, I think you're good when enabling it manually. At least it works perfectly for me manually. Have you set MadVR to transfer HDR meta data to display?

i do have transer meta data enabled. also not sure when it started acting up. for a good minute i stopped using madVR cause i noticed potplayer has madshi as a renderer without installing madVR. i also noticed the HDR button at the bottom of the player so i assumed it was now built in to potplayer. i later started to suspect it was not really HDR but more like windows fake auto HDR. switched back to madVR and hasn't been working right since. during the time i wasn't using madVR i started using windows 11. not sure if windows is the problem or something else.

I understand. Well, I have bought Smooth Video Project. Via the SVP installer, I simply choose to install the default stuff which includes MPC-HC + MadVR, then after I go into MPC-HC settings, set MadVR as renderer + HDR metadata to display, and it just works - and it works on both my monitors. Maybe try MPC-HC + MadVR?
