Hey!

i was thinking about building a home server since most old server parts these days can be bought for a bargain (especially memory)

im planning to use an e5-2697 v4 18 core with a rando atx chinese motherboard from ebay

my questions are:

1. is there any performance loss from cheaping out on memory speed? (especially with 2 sticks, because im planning to scale up in the future)

2. can i mix ecc and non ecc memory modules? (a reasonable person would assume ecc is an optional feature that can be turned off but you never know)

cheers!

Memory types cannot be mixed, in addition, the CPU has a quad-memory-channel, and the modules must be of the same size for normal operation. The Chinese board is bad, there is almost always no BIOS, this is a big problem.

idk the jingsha branded board im looking at seems pretty decent, GN reviewed one of their dual socket boards, and while it doesn't have everything, their review was positive.

it looks relatively well put together and even has features you wouldn't expect like m.2 slots and space for a wifi module

plus, the alternatives are old server boards that have no hope of ever fitting in a regular chassis OR absurdly expensive "official" x99 boards that may not even support xeons at all (i haven't looked into that)

tl:dr , it's good enough for my uses

that is actually a valid choice since it has onboard video
