Budget (including currency): Max (including tax) ~$5000 CAN

Country: Ontario, Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: AC Valhala/Unity, Starfield, Path of Exile

Other details

Current Planned Configuration: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/qck2Fs

Peripherals are not required.

Upgrading from: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/zK69fH Will be given to another person in full, will be upgraded to windows 11.

Resolution and Refresh Goals: as close to 144hz at 1440p where possible at max setting, but no dips below 60 fps in most situation as long as the quality is maxes out. Windows 11. Looking for something long term.

Other Notes: I do not plan on overclocking anything, but I do like the extra features on the board.

Possible Issues/Questions:

- 4090 Power Melting: Should I wait out the generation and try to compromise with a 4080 instead?

- Connector angle: Should I spring for a larger form factor case as in the XL version of the Meshify 2, I hear that the angle of the cable is very crucial and Seasonic recommends min 34mm before the bend is introduced after the GPU power connector. Overall not sure that there is enough horizontal clearance (between the power connector and the glass to achieve this)

- AM5: I hear it's very particular about ram and speed, the one I am using is on the QVL but that's about it.

RAM should be CL30 at that speed.

How is 4080 a compromise?  You only had a 2070S before, and even on it's release was a midrange card at best.  Relatively speaking, the 4080 is a better card than what you had before.  Not sure I am seeing any  reason to go with a $2300 4090.

You state 144Hz max settings, but  is this 1440p or 4K?  1440p is 4080 fine, 4K is 4090 required in general.

Hmm, will need to check QVL for the sticks are tested I expect they are RGB. any recommendations for speed + CL combination I should be using?

4080 is a compromise in terms of the frame rates with RT and on pushing a system that would last a longer with a 4090, unless you think it's marginal for the price. Yeah when I made that system I was not flush with cash per se, but it was just before the pandemic so it served me well for the games I did try to play but I am no longer happy with a near 60fps AC Oddesy with compromises at 1440p.

Edited the posting to specify.

I personally think the 4090 WAS the best value for the 4xxx series when it came out, as it was so far above the rest that the price actually made sense.  Now though?  I would buy a 4080/7900xtx to get what you want now  and then buy a new card in 4-5 years rather than getting a 4090 now, not using all of it, and then replacing it in 6 years, for example.

I am just balking at that price really.  I am trying to even keep it in a CAN vs USD conversion but it still makes me choke a little.

But as in all things, if you want it do it.  All you!

Edit:  It's a me issue, I can't advise on the 4090.  Not objective enough.

For RAM, I would look at 6000MHz CL30 as a solid baseline.  I prefer G. Skill RAM personally, and I am looking to replace my CL36 with CL30 as well,

I mean personally me too but if OP aim is 1440p240 or 4K144 the 4090 is the top dog on it. But if i got value on my mind? 7900XTX instead.

Yep, and with your build it is much more palpable as a whole system expense.

Thanks for the detailed build, overall though I am not familiar with those makers, but Dedayog makes a good case for 4080. which I think is what I will roll with, primarily because the connector is so new and still to young to be considered proper for general use. As for the case I too think having a larger one would at least afford the ability to route some cables with less bends.
